Acer Aspire 7720G: Penryn support
#1
Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a little problem. I have Acer Aspire 7720G notebook with Intel T7300 CPU, recently I purchased Intel X9000 CPU but can't get it to work with maximum multiplier wich should be x14, it only works at x6 all the time, in idle and 100% load, no difference at all. Tried different OS (XP, Vista, Win 7), all report that CPU speed is 1.2GHz, so does CPU-Z, RMClock, CPUgenie, power schemes are also not an issue here, whatever I choose it's always at x6, 1.2GHz. Even the Windows Experience Index in Windows 7 is lower for the CPU than it was with old one (5.1 for T7300 and 3.9 for X9000 !!!). This CPU is new so I don't think it's faulty, and since I have the latest BIOS for my notebook already installed, this forum is my last chance. I contacted Acer support but they didn't respond to my question if X9000 is supported in the latest BIOS version so I'm asking you to help me here. Can someone integrate Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 support in this BIOS Aspire 7720G 1.45
Thanks in advance!

You should have double checked this before you bought it , as notebook cpu's are not so easy to replace - nothing like replacing a desktop CPU.

We also cannot insert intel microcode updates at the moment as the microcode for new cpu's (newer than P4) is not availble to the general public , only Intel developers

Hello guys,

I have a Acer Aspire 7720G which is running an intel T7250. Recently i found an Intel T9400. While the socket it's the same i think (fits exactly right in the socket) when i press the power button the laptop starts with no screen and in 2 seconds shutsdown... I think with a modded bios with microcode updated it will play just fine! Can someone help me please??? it's too bad to have a 6mb l2 cache at 2.56 GHz processor and you can't use it! Confused

Here is a link of the latest version of bios which i have installed...
Original Bios v1.45

Here is a bios of Acer Aspire 8930G which supports T9400 and is an Insyde bios like 7720G
Acer Aspire 8930G

My regards,
Ribben

Hello Florin9doi,

Thanks for your reply... One question though i will flash it but if the T9400 doesn't play will i be available to boot my T7250? also please if you can replace no with 1067A (QHBJ, SLGE5) but with 10676 (SLB46) that's the cpuid of T9400 i have... But i thought that 965M doesn't support 1066FSB?!?!? Anyway thanks for your help...

Yes i am aware of that but i thought that the cpu would downclock to 800MHz as higher clocked RAM does....
OK once again thanks for your help!

I have bought a second hand Aspire 7720G (Inspyre bios) and upgraded the processor to a T9300 from a T7500. The processor is detected ok, but it turns out that the P States Frequencies (PSS fields) are not set ok and this makes Windows and Linux unable to downclock the processors using Speedstep. (Making my laptop very hot: 45C in Linux vs 32 with the T7500)

I tested with the Black 4.0 edition bios and also with the original Acer rom. I also edited both BIOSses with a hex editor to update the microcode to the latest version for this cpu. The upgrade works, but the ACPI data doesn't get written ok.

When I switch back to the T7500 everything goes ok. When I use the T9300 Linux complains about Firmware bug invalid PSS frequency 0x0Mhz, while reading the ACPI data in the kernel. It only keeps a single frequency 2.4 Ghz (while the proc is 2.5Ghz). When using the T7500 the cpufreq-info shows that there are 6 frequency steps available (800 - 2400 or so), the T9300 only shows one: 2.4Ghz.
In windows the T7500 auto downclocks (seen in HWINFO64), the T9300 keeps at 2.5Ghz. Clearly something is wrong. Using Throttlestop in Windows works, but in Linux there is no way to manually set the frequencies, or supply the correct values somehow. All the things I tried there had no effect.

I understand that this Inspyre bios from Acer calculates the frequencies instead of using tables with preset values, so I guess something goes wrong there with this newer generation of processors. (I also tested with a T8100, also the same issue).
ItÅ› strange, because Acer sold these laptops also with T9300 processors themselves. I guess they screwed up.

Attached is the 1.45 Black Edition 4.0, without the microcode updates.

I would love to know if I can do anything about this, or if someone knows how to fix these frequency settings.
