Gateway FX6800 (TBGM01)
#61
This is interesting. I mentioned earlier in theis thread that CPUZ showed my multiplier as 21. I went over to Intel and downloaded their Processor I.D. Utility and this is what I got: [Image: IntelProcessorIDUtilty.jpg]

Cooler Master 912 HAF Case, ASUS P8Z68-VPro MOBO, Intel i7 2600k OC'd to 4.4 GHz, 8 Gb of GSkill Ripjaws Series X 1600 Mhz ram, Samsung Optical drive, WD 1TB Caviar Black 6.0 Hdd, WD 1 TB Caviar Black 3.0 Hdd, Samsung 256 Gb SSD, EVGA Nvidia GTX 560Ti 1 Gb Video Card, Corsair AX850 PSU

This confirmed ny CPU-Z as well ( notice the multilplier is 21 ).

I still haven't gotten around to doing this, but did find an interesting quirk. As I said earlier, I noticed that the multiplier was at 21x. I decided to run the Intel Processor I.D. Utility. It said that the processor was a 920 and expected speed was 2.66 Ghz. The ACTUAL speed was 2.80 Ghz, which is in keeping with the multplier. I verified the speed with CPU-Z. I found that to be particularly interesting as I have done nothing with it to this point.

I just checked and according the site I have the latest version: R01-B0
http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product...delId=2297

Incidently, NewEgg has the Core i7 960 for $309.99. At that price, I went ahead and ordered one. Will probably do the BiOS flash later this week when I have the time.

Okay, This hasn't gone well. I put a 1Gb Flash Drive in and that was as far as it went. I opend the HP Utility and got the the window to set it up and could do nothing. Everything was grayed out. I can do it through My Computer though and in fact did format the Flash drive to FAT. I forgot to check the box to make a boot disk ( I know, you said not to use it or any other ). I have an i7 960 arriving tomorrow, so will work on that instead. Plug-in Performance boosts are much better and safer anyway, although it won't do anything much for the 1600 Mhz memory that is running at 1066 Mhz. There was someone at Tom's Hardware that has run this and OCed his 920 from 2.66 Ghz to 3.2 Ghz.

Ok. I figured that out. The Flash Drive wasn't plugged in well. It was enough to be seen, but not to transfer data or otherwise work with it. Once that was taken care of, I went through the process of formatting ( In FAT ) and the Boot disk thing. When that was done, I checked the Flash Drive and nothing was there as it was empty. I Did find the Boot stuff, or at least thing I did. This is the page I found: [Image: File.png] I Copy Pasted the BiOS Image onto the Flash Drive as well as the Flash Utility. I am in no way thinking of trying to boot to that thing. I have an i7 960 arriving today, and I don't want to brick my MOBO. Guess I'll pass on the BiOS thing for a while, at least. I haven't been able to unhide the files in that one step and think they went somewhere else according to that page. Hard to say. Anyway, although I have absolutely no qualms about flashing through Windows, I am not at all comfortable with this at the moment and will not pursue it beyond playing with the Flash Drive and trying to set it up. That is safe as long as I don't try to boot to it, also, I don't particularly like the Flash Drive I am using and have a better one coming.

Hmm good findings. Personally, I won't venture any farther than I already have unless there is an amazing find. Interesting how your CPU multiplier is at x21 when you did nothing. I'm just going to remove the custom BIOS that I loaded on earlier with the newest version from the Gateway support site that was mentioned above since I have no sleep functionality at the moment. Hopefully the updated BIOS fixes problems where when I come back out from sleep, sound doesn't work and video plays horribly slow. Next time I upgrade my mobo, I'll be sure to buy one that will prove easier to overclock my CPU (ASUS?). The stock one just doesn't cut it because of the limited number of PCIe slots and I'm led to believe that it's causing problems for my GTX 260 from working properly when I try to get a Hackintosh setup working with Leopard on my Gateway. Everyone elses GTX 260s work just fine. I personally installed Hackintosh on a friend's computer and was shocked to see his GTX 260 working without having to do any post install work. Overall, I pretty much hate the stock mobo!

I can play with it safely all I want as long as I don't try to boot to the Flash Drive, in which case, it best be right. Not so much worried about OCing the CPU as I just bought a 960 to put in here. Was Mostly thinking about getting my ram speed up to 1600 Mhz and the QPI reset from 4.8 to 6.4. Yeah, If you buy a MOBO, the BiOS will be unlocked, so you shouldn't have any issues. I did buy an EVGA Micro X58 MOBO, but that didn't go well. There wasn't enough USB headers for one thing. It is now sitting in the closet with all the other cast offs. Rolleyes May dump the 1600 Mhz ram and either go with 6 Gb of 1333 MHz ( will run at 1066 Mhz with a lower latency as well as timings ) or 9 Gb of 1066 Mhz ( even lower latency and timings ). I almost have enough stuff around here to build another 1366 PC. Just need a case and Optical drive.

Ok, We are getting somewhere. I reformatted the Flash Drive and started over. So far, it looks look. May try to boot to the flash drive and see if I get a Win 98 Splash Screen before I add the flash Utility. If so, then I'll add the flash uility and it's off to the races or disaster. Tongue Anyway, looks good so far.
