2x Xeon E5-2687W ES B0 stepping on Asus Z9PE-D8 WS
#11
I received confirmations that B0 samples do indeed work on Z9PE-D8-WS.

I will have them in the coming days so I will certainly test myself and report.

Both B0 and B1 samples are belonging to the "ES2" phase. B0 was produced in January 2011 while B1 was produced in March 2011. The differences between those two should be very small, both of them have buggy S3 handling while B0 has, in addition, some additional issues which I would consider very cosmetic and pretty much nonrelevant to "enthusiast" users.

Furthermore, regarding the 5A issue - I doubt very much it is the microcode (I swapped the microcode blobs from the working boards, to no avail) - what I definitely think it is is the QPI and Memory reference code implementation (QPI & MRC, you can find the driver in the EFI dump - it is called QpiAndMrc) as this is the place where different errata strategies of different CPU steppings are handled.

My theory is that ASUS board simply does not handle B1 QAMx specific errata in the proper way inside the QPI/MRC code. This might not be very surprising as I think B1 version of ES2 is a small "stopgap" towards QS, and it could very well be that motherboard vendors did not spend too much time validating on it. It could also be that ASUS did remove the specific codepath handling the B1 sillicion.

QPI and MRC code does quite a lot, and in many cases workarounds are done instead of the actual in-silicon fix. If the Z9PE-D8-WS QPI and MRC code is not handling the B1-specific errata (or it is mistakenly treating it as some other later stepping) this could perfectly explain the halt in the CPU System Agent initialization phase.

As I alrady said, unfortunately you cannot just swap QPIandMrc component from the working board, as there is much more inside possibly customized to the specific board layout. Unless you have some serous in-target debugging gear for CPUs and EFIs.

Interesting curiosity, I just tried updating BIOS on my X79 board (ASUS P9X79 Pro) from 0709 (initial) to 0906

And, as soon as I rebooted, I got the 5A error with the B1 (QAMS/QAMT) 2687W sample! POST progress is actually slower than on Z9PE-D8, so you can easily track the numbers:

Good POST (0709): 60 -> 67 -> 69 -> 6A -> 31
BAD POST (0906): 60 -> 67 -> 69 -> 6A -> 5A

So the problem happens between 6A (System Agent DXE Initialization) and 31 (Memory Installed)

What does this mean? My theory is that, some time in X79/C60x QPI&MRC code development ASUS just "optimized out" support for B1 steppings, most likely not consciously but as a result of different code modifications/optimizations. Perhaps as a result of PCIe / overclocking tweakings they list as changes in the more recent BIOSes for X79...

This also means that, at least in theory, it should be possible to re-enable support for B1 steppings in Z9PE-D8 WS as it is clear that this is a pure firmware problem.

It appears that memory is not the issue on X9DAi with QA92. I have no post with single Samsung 4GB DDR3-1600 ECC Reg M393B5273DH0-CK0 chip that mentioned as compatible and tested on Supermicro website. The only other thing to try is BIOS. Can anyone tell me what BIOS version X9DAi (purchased and shipped 3/1/2012-3/15/2012) has? Thank you.

Does X9DAi have any kind of POST debugging, like at least 2 digit display?

Unfortunately, without POST code it would be very hard to guess what exactly is wrong. Regarding the BIOS, there is one version available on Supermicro's website - this might be an upgrade to the factory-shipped BIOS but, unfortunately, I do not have SM board at the moment so I could not check.

If you could get hold of one of the C2-stepping consumer i7 CPUs, like 3820 - if the board post with it, this means it is (again) the ES2 compatibility issue.

I just tested the QA92 B0 samples with Z9PE-D8-WS and I confirm they work.

Interesting enough, if the boot CPU (#1) is B0 stepping, and the CPU #2 is B1 stepping - the board still boots and does not get stuck with the 5A error. However, if the boot CPU is B1 - it does not boot.

Hi, I have 2 QA92 cpus and they work to a point on a Z9PE-D8-WS. They post, and I can install windows... but then while going through all the driver installs, etc, windows just falls to bits.. BSOD all over the place until eventually it won't boot into windows anymore.
I have checked the board with my 3930 and installed windows on the same board and it is rock solid. I have the latest bios 0405 I think it is.
Are you having a similar experience, or is all going well for you? What bios version do you have? If everything is working, is there any way I could get a copy of the bios from you?
One strange thing is cinebench or the windows assessment tool don't run. They both error.

****update****
updated to latest bios 0504 that came out today... Installed windows again on my i7 3930K and did all updates... and ran system assessment. Then installed all software I was using (Vue and Adobe stuff), then switched cpus.. booted with QA92 in second socket. Wouldn't go into windows first 2 tries.. then booted with video card not working (black / monitor switched off). Then next boot, video card worked! After that, I put a QAMT in socket 1, and it booted and worked perfectly... Cinebenched at 23.25... which is rather epic to watch if you have ever used cinibench before.

only thing that isn't working now is the windows system assessment tool... gets to the end of the cpu test and fails as it can't test the ram properly. May be a problem with the QAMT not having access to the RAM.. but that doesn't really make sense given the rendering... but I don't really understand the technical side.. I just know it is working.. and very well at that. I'll see what happens when I start using over 16GB of ram... may start getting issues. We shall see.

Any workaround ?

Cheers.

Hello everybody

My English is bad, unfortunately, so this is a Google translation.

I have an Asus-D8 WS Z9PE which is equipped with two Xeon E5-2687W ES with the B0 stepping.
My problem is that the current Bios 0503, although both Xeons supported, but no later than GTX580 graphics cards.

If I install the latest BIOS 5701, I can operate my system stable with a Xeon, if I set the PCI-E support on GEN2.

The problem is that I can set the PCI-E support only when reset the bios, but since the 2nd Xeon is not enabled and I have to also adjust this setting to not have access to the GEN2.

I guess you'd have only one mod the default setting of BIOS 5701 to "Gen2" change of the PCI-E Supports "Auto" and then the system would run with two Xeons.

What do you think of my idea?

Thank you for your help

Hallo zusammen

I got because of someone's a tip:
Is there ne way to let show all hidden options?

In the image, the position is to see where those options are hidden, that I need.

Ich habe da von jemanden ein Tipp bekommen:
Gibt es ne Möglichkeit alle ausgeblendeten Optionen anzeigen zu lassen?
