In short , plug the decent one in , connect the monitor to the card , not the onboard , then look for an option in the bios to disable the onboard video.

If I disable the onboard graphics in hardware manager I have to reboot using the disk because although it is booting, I can hear it, I still get the black screen. I've tried to get help from Acer but that is a waste of time.

First , the card is definately working??? Can you try in a different computer to make sure?
Secondly , theres an option in the bios called Init Display First - set this to something other than Onboard
