So I have an ASUS X550CA which came with windows 8 and should support 10 as they do but on this laptop anything with a 10 kernel freezes on boot. tried legacy and UEFI but it doesn't seem to change anything. I've updated it to the latest 300 bios which did nothing.

at this point I'm all out of ideas lol
Have you installed this Win10 image on another system to be sure the install source is OK? No changes should be needed in BIOS for win8 to Win10
It even recommends Win10 Pro on the webpage for this model, and they have Win10 in the OS Choice menu when choosing driver downloads, so I doubt they've blocked anything.

Did you load optimized defaults, reboot and try to install again? If yes, check install source on some other system to be sure it installs properly.

If you have "Secure Boot/UEFI Boot" Enabled, you must install to a GPT partitioned HDD/SSD

You can try and see if disable Virtualization and VT-d helps, in advanced section, sometimes depending on CPU this can cause issues.
This may cause it's own issues, try both at once, then only VT-d by itself.
I know that this model is on their own compatibility list for upgrades, but that fails.

Yeah, I disabled virtualisation and it did nothing. It's enabled by default.

I tried installing Windows on another PC and transferred the drive but it changed nothing. Everything freezes at the Windows logo. I'm all out of ideas lol. I also tried using the Windows 8 installer with a 10 WIM but it didn't work either
Did you test Vt-d disabled as well? How far into the install does it get when doing direct install to this system, finished and then freeze on reboot into actual loaded OS or before it's done installing?

When you tested another install, moved back to this system, was that using this same install source?

It is possible, see here, someone with complaints about keys not working post win10 update

And more issues post install (Note, all these issues are probably now solved via driver/BIOS updates, these are old posts)

And other issues here, post install of win10

And more here, this one has BIOS details, maybe you need to check and make sure you have same set (Specifically >> Secure Boot Control > Disabled & Launch CSM > Enabled)

Hard drive will need to be formatted to MBR Partition type for the above settings, if you have GPT partition now delete it completely and let windows install set it all up again after you change BIOS to Secure Boot disabled, or make your own MBR partitions
