I think this is still possible because I found geekbench results https://browser.geekbench.com/search?q=r4+1680+v2 that use the exact components.

I am experiencing the same problem as one of the first users. I have in my possession an Alienware R4 with a recently purchased Xeon e5- 1680v2. My system will turn on, but refuses to post. Not even the Hard drive indicator lights up on the system. I have the latest Bios. I believe the R4 motherboard never received a service update to support Ivy Bridge or any V2 chip. I am currently troubleshooting this board at the moment. I have found a resource containing all relative Sandy Bridge processors with the same microarchitecture. https://www.cpu-world.com/Related_CPUs/S...ridge.html I have used this and ordered another Xeon chip that matches the same Sandy Bridge architecture. The E5-2690 to be specific. I will update once I have the new hardware installed. I am glad I found this thread.
I found a post on reddit about running an E5 1680v2 CPU on an Alienware aurora r4 motherboard. Unfortunately, the post is now unavailable for reply. If we can contact the person who posted it, we should be able to figure this out.
I put the link to the post here: “https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/zsg9az/new_life_for_50_alienware_aurora_r4_upgraded_with/”.
