ACPI in older BIOSes
#1
Big Grin
Hello everyone,

I have an old motherboard (Zida TX98-3D - Super Socket 7, can supply the manual and last BIOS) and it's dual-power. AT or ATX. Has AMI BIOS as far as I can tell. Even has an option in the BIOS to switch between AT and ATX power supply. No idea what that does, it can also be set to "auto"

Anyway, the big problem is that I would like to install Vista or Win7 on it, and while the Win7 DVD isn't recognized as bootable, the one with Vista is, but it does something like a BSOD except it's white on black, the error being 0xc0000225. It clearly states the firmware (BIOS) isn't ACPI compatible and that's why it can't start.

Installed WinXP just fine, as you'd expect. But of course, upgrading from within XP to Vista produces the same error - no ACPI.

My question is, can this be solved with just a new, custom BIOS? I have a second Super Socket 7 motherboard, made by Soyo (SY-5EHM) which looks like it has the same features, power-wise. It also takes either AT or ATX power but on that one, Win7 boots, installs and works just fine.

Another question is about those open source BIOSes. I heard of LinuxBIOS and then coreboot. Have never managed to find people able to direct me towards obtaining a brand new BIOS for the older motherboards, using that framework. I recently checked their website again and now I found some people who might be able to help, like the coreboot vendors and the consulting people. Didn't manage to contact them yet, but would they be able to solve this by just writing a brand new BIOS?
