Laptop processor upgrade (general concepts?)
#1
Hi.

Could someone experienced enough give me some answers please?

I want to switch Pentium B960 to i3 2328m on a HM-70 chipset.
Problem is laptop restarts each 30 minutes or so after that.
Downgrading back to B960 fixes this problem.

So it could be:
1 damaged CPU unit (think its not - same results on another i7 unit)
2 some vendor`s ME built in limitations
3 result of BIOS microcode missing for i3

So my questions are:
1 could wrong/missing microcode cause 30 min power interruption restarts?
2 is there a way to extract microcode from Linux *.dat containers (or convert them to bin)?

Hello!
Chipset HM70 does not support Core ™ i3, Core ™ i5, Core ™ i7 processors! The laptop will turn off after 30 minutes!

Notebook owners with HM70 have the option of replacing the HM75, HM76, HM77. After the replacement, the laptop will support the processors Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7.

Hi.
Thanks for your reply.
Even tho I must admit its very similar to one that tech support will usually give.  Rolleyes

I agree that HM-70 wasn't intended to be used in a pair with "core" CPUs.
BUT Im 99.9995% sure that its a pseudo restriction, created by low budget marketing rules.

(HM-70 based laptop prices compared by their HM-77 alternatives). Its a matter of price policy not technical problem.

Another fact is that in those 30 minutes countdown time my "core" CPU passes any tests and gives 100% pass results.
It just works! And I believe that those 30 min are there for some type of firmware event like reflashing or something that makes
it available to use "cores" after some manipulation. For me its just obvious.  Rolleyes

BTW there IS a solution involving OS sleep mode each 29th minute that restarts timer without hard power off effect.
What conclusions can we make?  Wink

Also I would be grateful for any answers according my initial questions.

30 minute shutdown is caused by Intel ME being in recovery mode
To check use "MEinfo" utility from Intel system tools for your chipset version : http://www.win-raid.com/t596f39-Intel-Ma...Tools.html

Sure, if the system is on for 30 mins it can work and restriction is artificial
May be you can stop ME from behaving bad by stopping it at early stage : https://github.com/corna/me_cleaner
For me_cleaner to work you need intel firmware image without any capsules and so on.
Also you need to be able to flash it. Most likely write ability is locked on laptop and you will need SPI programmer.
I successfully used me_cleaner only on desktop boards from MSI and gigabyte.
