Acer Aspire E380 R01-C0 With Unlocked Overclocking Options
#21
Well it depends on what exactly you wanted to overclock I guess, but a system like that you won't get that much out of it, but you might get some. If there is a later bios then the one modded and I modded it and you flashed over it the settings may stay.

Hey, I have an e380 and im wanting to unlock my bios. But my current bios are R01-B1. Should i flash with the R01-B1 listed for another acer or should I use the R01-C0 listed for the E380?

Use the R01-C0 , its a more up to date bios than R01-B1 for the E380

Will your modded R01-C0 bios allow for a phenom upgrade? My son wants to run a game which needs more than his 4400 and we're a little short on cash. An uprade to a phenom processor and a new video card would be a great option, were it possible???

I dont know about a phenom. I dont think so because they run at differents watts. But I upgraded my 4200 to a 5600 running at 2.9ghz for about $60. I ordered it on newegg and dropped it right in and the bios recognized it.

my settings arent saving either. i change it in the bios but when i turn on my computer everything is still factory defaults.

Actually, Phenom is very possible for this board, as we have been testing them and a lot are wrking. We just released a new test bios to ad support for all Phenom 1s and 2s. Progress is in the other thread for this board.

So now here's my report:

I tested several different OEM-BIOSes befor eI got here. But from that day off it changed my life! Now I tried all the different modded BIOSes for the Elitegroup ECS MCP61P-platform and its OEM-subversions like the MCP61PM-AM for Acer or Gateway/Packard-Bell, the MCP61PM-HM for Hewlett-Packard and the MCP61PM-GM for whoever. I even found a foxconn-version of this board and also this abit whatever TheWiz is talkin' 'bout but just a little later. He was such as fast that I was surprised with a modded version of this BIOS exectly when I wanted to tell him, what I've found! Big Grin
So I also tried this modded BIOS and I was more than just happy! Some of the other BIOSes had the OC-functions, some the updated proc-support and one of'em crashed because it didn't want to recognized any proc but this one was so surprisingly good, it had both, it was stable and it supported every proc I got for testing...
I have the Acer-version MCP61PM-AM Rev. 1 HT2000 with 4x1 Gb OCZ Value-RAM, NVidia GeForce GTS 250 GX2 2048, Samsung SpinPoint SPN anything 1Tb SATA II HDD and an LG SATA II DVD-RAM-drive (It is a little late here, I was at school to learn for my private pilot license and I'm doing some planning for a party on saturday 13th so forgive me, I do not give it a closer look!).
All the problems I got was the measured TDP-limit of 103 W, in reality it even not gets the 95 W TDP needed for some newer 45nm-AMD-procs. The highest long-time TDP is about 80 W. Think about: Your OS must be able to load the cool'n'quiet-driver to lower the speed/consumption before the PC crashes down and reboots.
At the moment it works fine, fast and stable with an AMD Phenom (I) X4 9500 @ 2400MHz with 72 measured Watts!!!
Here is a list of procs, i tested:
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (stock installed in Acer Aspire E380 wich was the former source of this board for me!)
Athlon II X2 245 (fast!!)
Athlon II X4 605e (no TDP-Prob, just not really fast!)
Phenom X4 9100 (fast, but not to and not so easy to get one!)
Phenom X4 9500 (the old 65 W TDP-one, really fast!!!)
Phenom X4 9750 Black Edition (slow 'cause of TDP!)
Phenom II X4 925 (no TDP-Prob, just not really fast!)
Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition (slow 'cause of TDP!)

As you can see I have proven the Phenom 9500 is the best value (30751 @ 3DMark Vantage 1.0.2 CPU is great isn't it?) but all of the X2 and X4 will work, eventhough not all do it fast or stable. The procs that weren't fast also weren't stable. They could but they do not have to boot correctly, I think it depends on the transistors, consistors and the power supply whatever you like!

I hope this helps you all a bit and everyone is now able to confirm my experience! Thanks TheWiz, thanks 1234s282!! Have a nice day like I had!!

OK. So I think the 65W PhenomII of newegg is the best option then, because you wouldn't be stressing TDP. Also, I just realized that I did not update the CPU AGESA and microcode. Tango, do you think if we updated your bios with the latest AGESA it would eprform better (AGESA is CPU pstates and basically how the cpu operates)

I don't know, it could be better but there is still a prob with the chipset, if it doesn't support the abilities of the proc we may have trouble with the system itself going to be a brick!! The BIOS I tested recognized all the procs with correct ID/Hex and they had just a problem with the TDP from bootup till finishing driverload... ATM I'm thinking how to create a higher possible TDP without burning the chipset or lower the procs TDP directly at POST per default-setting in BIOS. I don't know the difference between the present and the new AGESA-table, maybe at first we can make a diff to see what it is. Can you send me the involved modules per mail? I will have a look @'em! And maybe you also know, wich module is for the TMP- and RPM-sensors...
