Pegatron M2N78-LA BIOS Update Issue
#21
These updates are only the ROM-files, you can call it a mirror of the BIOS and flashing the savest way is from DOS (16-bit). Though there's no problem in installing any OS like Windows 7 or vista or anything else, you just need a bootable drive with a working DOS, the right flash-utility and one of the above mentioned ROM-files...

Sometimes you just have to try to be sure it is not working...

To anybody who's having problem,

Just follow the instruction in page 1 and flash the bios version 5.29, the noise will be gone.

A lot of thanks to MrTangoWhisky.

I cheated.

I noticed the "12v" pin on the 3-pin fan connector is only about 5v while running normally. It jumps a few tenths of a volt when the mobo tells the fan to speed up - annoyingly.

I removed the red wire and hard wired it to a 5v pin on an unused HD power cable. Runs nice and peacefully steady, and just a little faster than normal.

You gotta be careful with this stunt or you'll really mess something up, and of course I've completely defeated the fan speed control and the fan can't go faster if it needs to but I HATED that rev up/down crap and this patch was pretty fast/easy.

BTW- those CPU and case fans ROAR when you put an actual 12v on them!

I'm still waiting for my 8GB thumb drive to format so I can go the flash route...

Am so glad I found this thread. I thought it was just my imagination for or my PS was going out. Thanks MrTangoWhisky!

Rats. I wish I had stayed with the 5v jumper wire fix.

I flashed the BIOS and now all I get is beeps upon boot. Now what?

This BIOS chip is a tiny SMD chip...

Have you cleared your CMOS and removed any extra cards. the beeping is a good sign your board isn't a brick.

Thanks. No help.
I'm going buy a replacement BIOS chip. It's an SMD SOIC but I can handle that.

Ha. Chip got the BIOS running again. All good except I lost the onboard LAN somehow. Driver replace and BIOS reset/set don't help. Added a PCIx network adapter so now all back to where I was when I started: Damned fan still going up and down. Am afraid to try another BIOS update though. so I'm gonna wire the fan power to fulltime 5v from one of the several unused power cables of the PSU.

I have an AFI mobo Asus M2N78-LA (Violet6) in a HP Pavilion p6310y.

How can I update the AMI mobo using the VIO5.29.bin file on the first page?

I thought you had a to use a .ROM file to update AMI BIOSes?

Thanks for any insight on this...

*****************************
**Edit** - I tried booting into a Win 98 formatted USB stick, copied AFUDOS.exe (version 4.33) and the VIO65.29.bin file to the USB stick, rebooted, and then ran the command from the Win 98 command prompt: 'afudos /iVIO5.29.bin /pbnc /n' and NOW MY MACHINE IS FRIED. It just beeps continuously. Please tell me there is a way out of this mess.

Please try the recovery steps here:

http://www.bios-mods.com/amirecovery.html

If that ends up not working out, then please submit your chip through our reprogramming service to get back up and running.
