[Removed]HP Pavilion dv6737ez - Whitelist Removal Request, please
#1
Question
Hello

I own 'HP Pavilion dv6737ez Entertainment Notebook:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3658253

Here is the specification page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum...=c01320245&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3658253

Product Number: KN043EA#UUZ

(it was bought in Switzerland)
My Notebook came with an Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g wireless card. So I got myself a new wireless card that I wanted to try and see if it is better. New card is:

Intel WiFi Link 5100 (Model: 512AN_MMW)

It is an IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/Draft-N WiFi card.

So, I tried to put that card instead of the original one, but after I power up, my laptop halted with this message: "104 - unsupported wireless network device detected"

My Notebook originaly came with an F.25 BIOS version. So I decided to check the official site and see if there is a newer version. I found the latest BIOS version here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...gory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3658253&

From the drop down manu I selected 'Microsoft Windows Vista' (32bit version) since I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate. So I downloaded the latest F.34 Current (03-2011) BIOS version.

I 'rigtht-clicked' on the bios *.exe file (sp52477.exe) and after selecting properties I made it run in compatibility mode for Vista (just to be sure).

Everything went well, and after restart my laptop booted with new BIOS version: F.34 Current (03-2011)

After I turned off my laptop I put my new wireless card back (Intel WiFi Link 5100 (Model: 512AN_MMW) and tried to boot and see if it will pass. But no, BIOS again halted with the same error '104 - unsupported wireless network device detected'. Sad

So I started looking over google if I could find someone with the same problem. After 2 days of searching I found your site. Then I saw that there is a huge section where people keep requestiong bios modifications. (maybe its not polite to say that, but I'm 'happy' that I'm not alone with this kind of laptop problem).

I tried to search the section to see if someone already requested F.34 bios modification for the same model of the laptop, but I coudn't find it. And I fear to use other moded bios for different laptop models.

So, here I am, kindy asking some moder who would like to be kind enough and whitelist F.34 bios for my version of laptop (for 32bit Vista system, since my Windows 7 Ultimate is 32bit).

I hope I gave enough informations that the mod-master may require to succsessfully make adjustmants for this bios (whitelist modification).

It would be great if this whitelist can allow all future different WiFi cards that I may try (along with this one that doesn't work right now, Intel WiFi Link 5100 (Model: 512AN_MMW)

Thanks in advance!

p.s. Sorry that my request looks like a novel.

Thanks for your reply camiloml ! And thanks for trying to help me.

But...here is what happen:

I downloaded your modification of the BIOS and everything went without problems. I got a new BIOS with whitlist removed. When I power up my laptop it doesn't show anymore the error code how my wireless card is not supported. BUT at first time I already notice that windows boot was slower, and then I saw it actually was 'froze'.

So turned off my laptop and try again, This time windows 7 'almost' make it to desktop, but it was frozen again. I tried for the 3rd time and this time it reached desktop. I went to device manager and saw that there was an 'unindedtified wireless card' so I clicked on properties and run 'update driver'. Windows 7 found driver and I saw a message 'downloading driver'. After that, the message was 'installing the driver'. (I was thinking, 'ok this will work') and then, instead to say it was successfull, I got a pop-up saying something like:
Quote:windows cannot load this device driver code 31

I tried to shutdown and power-up my laptop, but it kept halting. I took couple of retrys to get it to windows desktop again. I tried to download driver by myself, and when I run the installation nothing happen.

Then I tried to boot into BackTrack (I got dual boot) and I was thinking 'maybe back track will pass this without problems if stupid windows cannot). But no, BackTrack also halted during boot, on 'hardware detection'. Ofcorse, I tried couple of times with the same result.

Then I inserted BackTrack 5 Live DVD and tried to see if that will work (thinking, 'maybe newer version of BackTrack will do it). No, same thing like with BackTrack 4, it halted on 'hardware detection'.

Then I searched the google for "windows cannot load this device driver code 31" and "Intel WiFi 5100", and found some topic on one forum where users were talking about Intel WiFi 5100 cards.
Acording to most of the posts in that topic, it seams that Intel forbid installing drivers for its wifi cards on AMD based laptops! (imagine that!). Some users said that it could be possible with older Intel cards.
One user had installed 'whitelist removed F.32' BIOS for his laptop and he sais that will allow PRE-5100 Intel cards to work, like the one he got (4965 AGN).

Well, isn't that unfair from intel? (some said Intel was trying to make his card mostly workable on his 'cetrino' platform).
Topic is located here:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.p...pic=157597

Offcorse, when I put back my original card, with Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g chip, windows booted without problems.

So, camiloml, it may be that your BIOS works without issues, but maybe its the Intel drivers problem. I cannot check your BIOS with other wifi cards because I don't have them. I believe if your BIOS version is ok, then it must be that Intel drivers has some 'code' inside them to check which plaform the drivers are going to be instaleled on, and if it is AMD, they will refuse to be installed.
(if someone now can modify driver installation).

But then agian, why would Linux (BackTrack) halt on 'hardware detection'? There must be something wrong. Sad

Anyway, THANKS A LOT camiloml for your effort to help me!

If you have any other suggestion what I can try to make this card work, I'm listening. Smile

Or maybe someone else had the exact problem with his wireless card? Maybe somoene would like to confirm my story?

seems some kind of hardware incompatibility at chipset level, hard to bypass i guess.

Yeah, it might be something like that. Intel and AMD don't love eachother too much. But still, its unfair to all the people who are buying their products.

Is there a way I could find which cards people perfectly using with their laptops after they used your modified BIOS? (cause now I need to know even that before I pickup my next WiFi card)
