He has solder type and solderless adapters (similar to clip, but it's PCB jumper you push onto pins of BIOS in place)

The second image shown in the listing gives an example of how it goes down onto chip only it's showing reverse since you're putting chip into it in that image. And none of his images match current stuff he's selling, it's all smaller and more updated. Just message him if you plan to purchase and tell him you need Programmer + solderless SOIC8 to DIP8 adapter + Solderless SOIC8 with spare 64MB chip (usually already included in price).

He used to sell just all the tiny adapters for $2-4 and I picked up a bunch to use different ways, now it looks like he only offers the DIP8 to SOP8 adapter by itself for $2 which requires you to solder BIOS on/off, the rest of the adapters are all in random kits and not ideally packaged for some uses. How I mainly use is similar to "Usage 4" in this listing, but no cables are required and the adapters are not like shown, I think all dated images here too (He has solderless SOIC8 to DIP8, which this example says you need SOP8-to-DIP8, can use either way) https://www.ebay.com/itm/271307536331

I know that's a lot of random stuff and listings, items/examples etc, that's why I said it's better to just get the $2.xx CH341A and a SOIC8 test clip cable and be done with it all, much easier to get the right stuff first time and not have to wait on second shipments. And speaking of that, be sure you get the 1.8V adapter I mentioned previously too, you'll need it unless you end up with a programmer that can do 1.8V chips (cheap CH341A does not, without the adapter)

So if I wanted to use one of the Nanos I could connect a couple rows of 4-pin "pin headers" to the 16-pin DIP socket behind the PLCC socket, attach the ribbon cable or Dupont leads from the clip to the pin headers and call it a day?  Or do I have to make use of an adapter that uses the PLCC socket?

I know it wasn't clear, since it's really the worst option in your situation, that's why I never suggested it really and trying to explain it only makes things worse so I rarely link to this

I've never used the headers on the back, so not sure how those are pinned out, but I assume you might be able to cable to them once you ask him for the pinouts. The normal way to use it would be connect your SOIC8 cable to the DIP8 socket in the middle of the programmer, same as you would for a cheap CH341A programmer. PLCC32 socket never used for anything except for PLCC32 chips.

So yes, I never thought of that since you have clip already, it would be same as if you purchased adapters, connect it to the middle of the programmer at the DIP8 socket with a DIP8 PCB and cables that are made for the SOIC8 clips (Or directly into the pin holes properly, DIP8 PCB adapter ideal since those holes are large), connect clip to chip and then call it a day. If you get this, since you have clip already, use the first link I gave you it's the cheapest option, or this one has the faster shipping (Both cheap and fast usually 12-14 days to US, sometimes faster as you know with any good China/Korea shipping sometimes can come fast) https://www.ebay.com/itm/281126398898

I swallowed hard and went straight to the link for the CH341A you first sent and bought it. Doesn't cost anything, just hard to believe something that absolute dirt cheap will actually work. Very hard to believe -- like they're almost giving them away. I guess I got so wrapped up in this having to work perfectly I didn't want to compromise on any chance it could go wrong.

I'll get it before the end of April. I paid the first level of shipping which shaved 10 days off free shipping, but if I bought it when you first told me I'd still be waiting almost that long anyway.

Oh, well.

Yes, the tiny cheap CH341A work just fine, I use them and help lots of people use them all the time.

Wow $285 is insane amount, I wouldn't pay that if I was a millionaire, especially since $2 programmer works fine with $3 adapter

Similar kits with less goodies, EZP2010 and EZP2013 (usually $15-20), it's all China made stuff though, so if you order from China it's much cheaper

You can probably find those adapters at Newegg or Amazon, I didn't check but I assume so since you can get the CH341A's there.
