ASUS P5E3 Deluxe BIOS 1502 RAID Request
#11
Wow, that was fast! I wasn't even sure If I would ever get a reply in this old thread here Wink

If you could upload the 1502 BIOS with the 11.2 Option ROM just here in the forum, that would be great and would make it easy for anybody else who might still be using that good old mainboard.

If you don't use the quick reply box at the end of the thread and instead click on "ADD REPLY" in the lower right (or use any of the reply buttons below another post), then you can add attachments to your post. It says I have 20MB available for attachments, so that should be enough to upload one or two versions.

And if it works, my offer is still valid: I would like to donate a few $/€ to say thank you!

BIOS updates for ASUS P5E3 Deluxe based on 1502 version (updated intel OROM).

15021051.rom (Intel v10.5.1.1070)
1502-106.rom (Intel v10.6.0.1091)
1502-108.rom (Intel v10.8.0.1303)
1502-110.rom (Intel v11.0.0.1339)
1502-111.rom (Intel v11.1.0.1413)
1502-112.rom (Intel v11.2.0.1527) Suggested to update to this
1502-116.rom (Intel v11.6.0.1702)

On all this versions the Jmicron bios is the original unmodified edition 1.06.69 or the updated 1.07.28.
1502-112.rom has the original 1.06.69 edition, only intel edition is changed.

Intel suggest to use the driver version designed for the OROM version of the controller, so you need to update the driver on your windows after the bios update. updating drivers is easy just run the update, do not uninstall previous edition and then reboot because windows will not start, while downgrading you need to have some technical skills otherwise you may get Blue screens while windows start.
I found that the best performance version for this motherboard is OROM 11.2.0.1527 (1502-112.rom) with its driver version 11.2.0.1006.
I used 11.2 for several months with no problems.
intel driver 11.2 AHCI and RAID for winXP,Vista,7    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_...ldID=21854

Note: if you update to OROM 11.6 and you update driver version to 11.6 then you can go back to previous version but it is suggested to format your windows. Intel has changed something from 11.2 to 11.6 drivers and going back is not work well. Also 11.6 driver is not working with windows XP.
OROM 11.6 with drivers 11.2 (also OROM 11.6 with drivers 11.6) had slow performance.

All bios has been tested. However, i take no responsibility if something goes wrong, use the files provided at your own risk.
Always update motherboard bios while the computer is connected to a UPS and always using the motherboard internal utility for bios update.

Note: 1502-112.rom is the same that is on the rar file. Just upload separate in case you can't open rar files.

Kind Regards,

You are awesome! Cool

As I'm currently at the office, I can't test it now but will as soon as I get home.

Currently I have Intel RST 11.7 installed, that was the oldest version I could find quickly this morning after I had flashed the modded 1502 BIOS by Dansolo. As far as a few quick boots in the morning to test the changes it seemed to work fine with Option ROM 9.6. So I hope it also works well with the 11.2 ROM. I really do not plan to reinstall my Win7 x64 just for this. If it really is necessary, I'll rather do the upgrade to Win 8.1 (I've been using it on my notebook for quite some time, and see no reason not to), but then I'll probably toss out the old hardware as well.

I don't know if this motherboard works with win8.
RST11.7 should work with 11.2 OROM but i don't know if performance would be good.
After update install a hdd testing tool and post MB/s you get. If you have time you can also test the 11.6 OROM and see the MB/s you get.
Then you can return back to 11.2 OROM there is no problem changing bios. Changing driver version you need to know what you are doing.
Note: If you don't want to format windows don't return driver RST version backwards.
I have test OROM 11.6 with driver 11.6 maybe with driver 11.7 has better performance.
Post back to this board your results.

Hello again!

Sorry that I disappeared for two days.

In the meantime, I successfully flashed your modded 1502-112 BIOS, created and initialized the RAID1 and copied all my data from the other Disks.
Everything worked without a hitch and I'm really happy that I can postpone hardware upgrades of my system until a later date (guess I'll need a new system once Star Citizen/Squadron 42 comes out, but so far Arena Commander runs "okayish" Wink).

The only strange thing that I have discovered probably has to do with the Intel RST drivers/software: I used an eSATA desktop HDD docking station to copy the data from the old HDDs after I had removed them from the system. Of course the eSATA ports on the P5E3 deluxe are managed by the JMicron controller. But as soon as I connect a HDD and power up the docking station, I'm no longer able to start the Intel RST software... It just says "service not running" even when I start the service manually (which seemed to work). Once I disconnect all eSATA devices, Intel RST runs fine again (doesn't even need a reboot). I'm pretty sure that is just some incompatibility between the Intel software and the JMicron controller, but at first I was worried that there might be a problem with the OROM version and/or the RST driver version I'm using.

So I can confirm that your 1502-112.ROM works fine and so far there seems to be no problem with the OROM 11.2 and RST driver 11.7 Smile

I also downloaded HD Tune Pro and ran some benchmarks (for some reason I only did that on a single disk instead of doing it on the RAID) and the performance of my 3GB WD Red HDD(s) is pretty close to the numbers in this review of the Disks from 2012 (in German): http://www.hartware.de/review_1549_6.html
My access times are a lot better (16 ms vs 22 ms for the read benchmark), my IOPS and transfer rates are also consistently above those in the review, with the only exception being the maximum (burst) read/write rates where my numbers are a little bit lower. But I guess most of the differences are probably related to differences between the revisions of the HDDs (newer firmware, different platters used, etc.).
I could upload screenshots for comparison later.

Anyway, a big thank you for your help!

PS: check your PMs Smile

Dear Aerospike,

Nice to hear that all gone ok and the performance you get is good. Smile

The JMicron problem sounds like a software problem. Try update the JMicron driver from here.
ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/SATA_Controller/Windows/
JMB36X_WinDrv_R1.17.65_WHQL_eSATA.zip
I had try this file and worked for me as the controller on this board is eSATA not normal SATA.
This is why available OROM new version doesn't work correct on this board.
I can create a BIOS with updated OROM of JMicron to 1.07.28 but only if you don't work it in AHCI-RAID mode.
AHCI mode cause problems with this edition of OROM.
I do not suggest as i remember having problems with JMicron OROM updates, so i make only intel update.
After Driver update i believe your problem will be solved, if not there is not really a problem if you don't have connected devices on JMicron all the time.

Kind Regards

Thank you for the advice and the offer to do another BIOS mod for the JMicron OROM.

I don't think I will need that. Actually the JMicron has been disabled in BIOS ever since I got the board because I have never used the eSATA ports before. I always disable mainboard components that I do not need. I just had to enable it to use the Docking Station with eSATA because obviously using USB 2.0 would have been agonizingly slow Wink

But I will try to update the JMicron driver and see if it will fix the problem, before I disable the JMicron again Smile

Dear sia,
This motherboard support maximum 8GB because of chipset (X38) limitation.
You can't do something by bios modification.

Hello!

I have P5E3 (not deluxe, not PRO) motherboard. Will this bios image work for it? If not, can I kindly ask you for the patch?

Thank you!
