Alienware M17x R1
#31
This is going to make all sorts of folks crazy happy! And if you can do one of the Alienware BIOSes, they should all be similar so that is pretty awesome too.

Hey guys,

Here is the completed version 1 mod: Please prepare a CRISIS recovery disk in case and use caution when flashing. I have attached the BIOS link and final screenshot below Big Grin

Please report whether it is successful first, then I will make a static HTML page with all the new info so you can link it to your friends.

Good luck!

That is awesome!

I feel bad though because I am going out of town for business tomorrow and wont be back for a couple days. I wont have my M17x with me. It will be like torture haha

Got the BIOS loaded now and played around with some of the settings. So far the system seems stable enough. The only thing that has been able to crash it is the BSEL Override option but I still need to research this and what effect it has.

Now for the sad (?) part, so far I have not been able to see any actual evidence that the new voltage settings in the modded bios are taking effect. I have been using both CPU-z and HWInfo32 to monitor the system. The CPU voltages reported do not seem influenced by the setting in the bios Sad

Any thoughts?

It is possible Leveling VCore does a different function thatn CPU VCore would, I'll have to check it out.

And setting the max chipset voltage did not alleviate the low FSB limit I had been experiencing. I cannot test the throttle fix out as I currently only have one of my 2 4870s and cannot stress the system to the limit.

Hello,

The bios seems stable to me, but the fans stop to kick in under heavy load.
When I run OCCT it always shuts down because of temperature too high. But the fans just don't start to cool.
Same when playing games, before I could hear them kicking in now they don't.

The modified BIOS image basically exactly the same as original BIOS A06. The only different is the modified BIOS have hidden options/menus unlocked. Did you change anything in BIOS settings? Can you flashed the original BIOS A06 to test the FAN behavior? (Anything you do is at your own risk.)

If you use my modified BIOS image & you like it, please consider making a donation. Thank you very much. Smile

I have my M17x back up and running fully now so can continue to test the new BIOS now. What do you want me to test? I have my 4870s back in it as I have traded back with the guy I was borrowing 5870s from. That project just was not working out.

Reflashed to the original bios then back to the modded again and everything working fine.
Shame there is no vcore voltage. Can't figure out what the leveling voltage does, but has no difference in stability when overclocking like vcore would.
Are all the hidden features now unlocked or are there some menus still hidden?
