Does Ami Aptio V have a recovery flash function?
#1
Hi everyone, long time no see!

After successfully modding the BIOS of my HP DM3 1010eg back in 2014, I want to do the same with my Chuwi Minibook X, as I suspect there is a lot of fine-tuning potential to be gained from the N100 CPU inside.

I already successfully dumped the Aptio V ROM with AFUWIN 5.16.04.0135 and was able to load, modify, and save it in AMIBCP 5.02.0034.
The modified ROM has the exact same size as the dump, so far so good.

Before flashing the modified image, however, I’m interested in understanding if Aptio V – or the Chuwi Minibook X in particular – supports a recovery flash function.
My online investigation didn’t yield a clear answer; in AMIBCP I can see a UEFI section labeled “Recovery” with a subsection called “Flashing”, but this doesn’t explain:
  • How the recovery mode works: Do I need to prepare a USB stick with a specific capacity or formatting?
  • File requirements: Must the ROM file be named in a specific way to trigger recovery?
  • Boot process: Are any keypresses at startup necessary to initiate the recovery mode?

Another point that caught my attention is the size discrepancy between my dumped ROM and the official ROM I downloaded from Chuwi:
  • Official ROM: 16,777,216 Bytes
  • My dump: 10,485,760 Bytes

This raises a couple of additional questions:
  1. What accounts for the size difference? Could the official ROM include extra modules or a reserved recovery partition that my dump might be missing?
  2. Are there different BIOS regions or protection mechanisms on the Chuwi Minibook X compared to other devices?

To summarize, I’d greatly appreciate any insights on the following:
  • Recovery Function: Has anyone successfully used the recovery flash feature on the Chuwi Minibook X or a similar device with Aptio V? What are the exact steps or requirements (e.g., USB stick size/format, file naming conventions, key combinations) to activate it?
  • ROM Size Discrepancy: What might explain the difference in ROM sizes? Is there a chance that parts of the official ROM (like a dedicated recovery region) are not captured by a standard dump?
  • General Experience: For those who have modded Aptio V BIOS in similar devices, what pitfalls should I be aware of, and are there any recommended guides or resources?

Any insights, experiences, or documentation links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Edit:
Found this in the Aptio V TSE User's Guide

"The system can enter Recovery Mode under certain circumstances."
But what circumstances are those? lol xD
