ECS Nettle 1 with AM3 CPU supporting BIOS (possible?)
#1
Hello,

I have been scouring around the net but I have been unable to find any BIOS updates that would allow my ECS Nettle 1 MCP61 to support AM3 Phenom II processors. I have been searching as I would like to upgrade to an AMD Phenom II X6 Black (1090T).

As you guys seem to be the masters at this;
1) is it even possible for a Nettle 1 to get a BIOS update to support AM3?
2) would it be possible for me to flash it with a Nettle 3 BIOS (I have heard the Nettle 1 & 3 are very similar) or even a Nettle 2 one?
3) if so would you guys be willing to make me one as my only other potion is to try to save up enough money to get a new motherboard and RAM as well as the CPU.

If you want any more info on my system etc just ask.

I don't exactly know what type of boards the nettle-series are, but it seems to me, nettle1 is AM2. Thus it will be impossible to use a CPU with 125W TDP without a high risk to fry the board. That is because AM2-boards lack the split powerplane feature of AM2+ and AM3, so all cores and the northbridge (IMC and HT-controller) of a CPU will run with the same voltage, increasing the TDP well over 125W.

I only know of very few AM2-board from Gigybte to be able to run X6 XPUs with 95W (which aren't sold atm, at least not here in Germany), some are able to run the 125W X4 that are also available as a 95W-version (9750, 9850, 945), but most board only support up to 95W.

So, even if it was possible to mod the board to support AM3 CPUs, you would only be able to run a X4 945 95W or an undervolted 955BE.

I have no idea if it is possible, though.

Thanks for the reply Smile
It looks like I will have to upgrade my mobo afterall. I also did some more research and it looks like I will need to regardless.

Why would you want to use a sixcore CPU on a MCP61-board anyway? I could understand if it was once very expenisive or has features modern boards don't have like two LAN-ports on nforce5 or wasn't as outdated but this board seems outdated in every aspect.
