Enable XD-bit Samsung Q1
#1
Hi guys,
I own a Samsung model NP-Q1 tablet PC. I would like to upgrade it to Windows 10 but I can't because of lack of the eXecute Disable bit function.
Actually the processor (Celeron M ULV 353) supports it:

http://ark.intel.com/it/products/27157/I...00-MHz-FSB

However i can't find it in the BIOS setting. I suspect that is hidden somewhere. Original bios download link:

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/conten...1_20MA.exe

Could you please enable switching XD-bit on or off?

Regards,

Andrea

Go to BIOS. tab Advanced -> EDB (Execute Disable Bit)
Enable it.
Download Coreinfo, run it command line and post results.

There is no EDB in the BIOS screen, i'll post the screenshots.

Here you can see the "advanced" tab of the BIOS menu. Nothing about XD-bit.

Make CPU-Z TXT Report and post "Processors Information" & "Thread dumps" sections from it.
Download SYMCMOS and run in native(!) DOS:
SYMCMOS –v2 –lOLD.TXT
Post file old.txt
Code:
usage:
   SYMCMOS <options>
      -?                show this help
      -D                program BIOS default values
      -S[filename]      produce symbolic report file
      -L[filename]      produce literal report file
-U[filename]      update CMOS using script file
      -C[filename]      combine build files
-F[filename]      use combine file for report
      -V0               disable logging
      -V1               enable error logging (default)
      -V2               enable verbose logging

For "Native DOS" you mean I have to make like a USB stick with MS-DOS only? I'm running Win 7 on this machine so I only have DOS prompt with it.

Yes, you need "a USB stick with MS-DOS only". But requested information from CPU-Z TXT Report is more necessary.

In the meantime, here you are the coreinfo and cpu-z reports.

Bad news:
1. XD-bit is disabled.
2. I don't find the code in BIOS that disable XD-bit. I think unlocking hidden options in BIOS will not help.
3. In your system XD-bit isn't disabled by BIOS. Cause 34 bit of IA32_MISC_ENABLE (MSR with address 0x1A0) is equal zero.

P.S. SYMCMOS's information isn't needed anymore.

Read Intel® Celeron® M Processor on 90nm Process Datasheet:
Quote:Execute Disable Bit support for enhanced security (available on processors with CPU Signature=06D8h and recommended for implementation on Intel® 915/910 Express Chipset-based platforms only)

Your CPU has CPUID=0x6D6 (stepping B1), not 0x6D8 (stepping C0). It's the reason why your CPU doesn't support XD-bit.
