HP Elitebook 8540w Microcode for I7 920XM
#1
Brick
Hello to everyone, i found this old laptop for $10 in a second hand shop and i bought it and i upgraded it with an I7 920XM but the laptop starts, the fan goes to full speed and i get come code but i have black screen.
I try to check the Microcode support for my bios but sadly looks like the microcode for 920xm is partially implemented??
The I7 920XM dosen't have a dedicated GPU but i have an Nvidia 880M with MXM slot, it should not be a problem also for the chipset should be QM57 and i should support the I7 920XM if i am right.

My current bios Revision is F60 Rev A. Right now because i am not at home i don't have my eeprom programmer ( i work with cars ECU ) but i ordered a CH341A and it should arrive these days, I also already have a full backup of my bios if we can try with the bootable USB to upgrade the bios i will be so happy, maybe we will be so lucky Big Grin
Also i use Liquid metal and Fan mod ( i soldered a switch to the Fan RPM control, when i work or play video games i usually turn that ON, also because i overclocked the GPU. Temp never goes over 55C for the CPU and the GPU around 60c. i also have 130W power supply and many Ram memories around.

I will upload the current backup of my bios and the bios installer.Exe for my laptop.

You need to find i7-720QM for tests.

Herllo, and thank you for you reply, the my laptop support 520M 540M 620M 720Qm 740Qm.
in theory 720Qm microcode should be also fine for the 920xm? maybe they whitelist that CPU from the bios?   ( From an old forum someone said that the problem is missing microcode for the I7 920XM )

If you want i can buy it on aliexpress but it will need al least 3 weeks to arrive sadly,
Here is the screenshot from someone who try 740QM and it was succesfully but i think turbo didn't work and the microcode was partially used.

Both use the same microcode.

No, the reason - overheating & overloading power subsystem.

Even if it dosen't post the bios? i can understand that the VRM are overheating but at least posting or throttling on windows, i can find a solution with that i could design a small board to add more phase to the CPU
( it's more like an experiment to not get bored during the night Big Grin

Do you think there is some switch in the bios to enable this CPU to at least post and enter the bios?
Thank you again!

I had some free time today and i see that the microcode from my Hp 8540w and the other from other laptop who are compatible with I7 920XM are the same, it's not a microcode problem sadly, but looks like the APIC Table only support 4 CPU rather than 8 CPU

Do you think you can help me to patch the APIC table?

The VRM should,'t be a problem because the HP EliteBook 8740w uses the same VRM and also have the same chipset and looks like very similar the mainboard, i will try to download the bios and see what is the difference with my HP 8540w

VRM MOSFET have power limits. More temp - less power.

I understand that but they both use 3 phase VRM MOSFET and  It should post the bios at least, i check the motherboard of the 8740w and basically they're the same except the design of the gpu slot is a little bit different but about the vrm are the  same for the CPu and GPU.

Do you think it would be easy to wait for my CH341A to arrive monday and we give a look about the bios? maybe i could import some tables or directly flash the Bios from a dump and see what happenBig Grin

the VRM are the same also for the GPU so it's not about that. for me it's something about bios level.
They also use the same bios F.60 Revision A, i check now with Hex Editor and they're very similar, i will try to import few tables from the other bios and see what happen monday.

UPDATE: I got the CH341 Programmer and i directly flashed a dump of a bios of the 8740w and the I7 920XM has always black screen, But the I5 520 works fine with the bios of the 8740w, the keyboard layout is working fine and also the stress test and videogames...
I checked the VRM with the Multimeter and they get power with the I7 920xm and the current doesn't drop, i get the same values of the I5, I think that the CPU is dead ( i bough it on AliExpress ) the 3 Phase are the same for the VRM and there is no noticeable difference with the motherboard, maybe the CPU is just dead... I will give a better look the next week i will try to see if they both share the same value in OHM on the same pin of the CPU.

It's senseless. You need to find i7-720QM for tests.
