Pegatron M2N68-LA/HP Narra3-GL8E: CPU Upgrade
#21
Well before we officially rule it out I would see if cool and quiet is interfering and disable it. as for the fan, its most likely simply the mobo doesnt output power to the right pins for a 4 pin fan. But obviously if others are having success with the Phenom IIs its most likely because the 965 has the 125W tdp and you should move to a 945 95W Phenom II.

Hope this helps,
TheWiz

I have a custom computer with the M@N68-LA (Narra3) from and HP PC in it. I just bought a AMD Phenon II x4 Black Edition. I tried to place it it in the pc but IT only regonized the brand an d not the model and did not founcton to it s full potential. My Bios Version is 6.00. I tried to used the program that is on the Pheonix Site to update the bios (It is a Pheonix award Bios) but it did not work) Also I have a different installtion of windows on the pc now then was on the HP pc when I bought is so I no logher have the HP updatin g utility and cant update the BIOS. I need that update to OVer clock and properly run my Phenon Core.

I Have try hundreds of programs and gone on the hp site and tryied to search for update for the MOBO but every time I try to istall omne it says it is for the wrong mom type.

I really need help.

I have this motherboard. HP put it in MANY HP/Compaq models.

You didn't identify your CPU fullly, but the AMD Phenon II x4 Black Edition class of CPUs require 125w power. The max that this motherboard can support properly are the 95w CPUs. This is not a bios issue, it is a hardware power issue. When your CPU boots up, it tries to run full speed (at 125w). When it does not get the 125w, the CPU goes into reduced speed mode to match the available power. This is bad for overall speed, but very good for the hardware. If the CPU continued to try to draw the full 125w forcefully, the motherboard would fry. This makes your CPU dangerous for this board. It is a match that may very well end in a failure of the board because on every reboot the CPU retries to get 125w and stresses the board.

I have upgraded my M2N68-LA (Narra3) with a AMD Phenon II 945 x4 95w CPU. It runs at full 3.0ghz speed and is a fully functional Phenom II CPU. But, the BIOS identifies the CPU as an "AMD Processor model unknown".

In the end, you need to swap in a 95w CPU or get a motherboard that can accommodate the Black Edition CPU. I highly suggest you do not run the Black Edition in this motherboard.

Good luck,
MSBT

Would it be possible to get a copy of your bios as the 5.13 bios that i have does not seem to work. With the only possible expalation that hp has recently modded the bios not to support these cpus.

Thanks

Hello guyz i have a M2N68-LA (Narra3), and was wondering if the AMD Athlon II X4 640 would work with it. I can't find any bios that would add support for it. So do you think it will or will i have to use a modded BIOS or something ... ?

Link to the MOBO: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01492775&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_us/c01492775/loc:2&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3752885#N62

Thank you so much for your help

Now, this is very interesting. I'm stuck with a HP Pavilion equipped with a M2N68-LA Narra3 motherboard. I've always thought that the board could not handle anything more than a Phenom I x4 9600 (as the HP site tells us).

Could you please tell me which BIOS are you using (v5.13 supplied by HP or something else --> if something else, could you be so kind and upload the BIOS you are using here) and what is the exact model of your CPU? HDX945WFK4DGM, HDX945WFK4DGI or something else?

Has anyone tested this board with a 3.2 GHz HDX955WFK4DGM (95W Phenom II x4 955) or HDXB97WFK4DGM (95W Phenom II X4 B97)? Would a 6-core Phenom II X6 1065T (95W, HDT65TWFK6DGR) work?

Thanks in advance,

I have the HDX945WFK4DGI on BIOS 5.13 (moded with a win7 slic). The HDX955WFK4DGM may work. But I would highly doubt any 6-core cpus will work with all 6 cores firing. Give it a shot and let us know!

Thank you so much for your quick reply! It seems that none of the local computer stores have the HDX955WFK4DGM model in stock, but I sent them email and asked whether one could be made available by request. If I can get hold of that CPU somewhere, I will report here whether it works or not. If not, then I'll probably try to find a HDX945WFK4DGI too.

I believe I have found this CPU at the following online store:
