Finally got the EFI USB to boot and it showed the grub screen in yellow.
Entered the command setup_var 04AB 0x0. It gave me the big warning screen, said it found the proper guid, complained something about the size and then said it was updating the value from 01 to 00. Sat there for a few minutes, I left it alone and when I came back the machine had rebooted and came back to my usual Linux boot login screen.

I shut the machine down and booted using the bios flash usb drive and tried to flash it again and got the same error as before about the read only area. So I guess it's a no-go.

But I am glad the machine is not bricked.

Now what options do I have left - the eeprom flashing with CH341A and SOIC8 from e-bay?

Hi,

my mom is actually going crazy over the WiFi card installed in her Yoga 2 13. Since it always loses connectivity it's almost impossible to stream something or download a large file without it being corrupted during the transfer. I just stumbled upon this thread and am willing to try but do I really need to flash the BIOS through an external SPI? There is a BIOS option to enable downgrading and the platform.ini of the InsydeH20 Flash Tool also seems to allow it, if properly configured.
So if I would be able to flash the new BIOS live from the currently running system, wich is Windows 8 - Just like a normal BIOS update. If that's possible I'd love to donate in exchange for a new Patches.txt Tongue
If this is possible I will upload the result of BACKUP_Tools and Universal Bios Backup for you, the next time I see my mum.

AWESOME! Here's the original BIOS file and the BIOS Backup + the ROM file.

I'm also getting Error 280: Failed to disable write protection. But after that it says "Ready to flash". Can I really proceed or do I need an external SPI USB Programmer? If you are able to install BIOS updates from Lenovo there must be a way to disable the write protection, at least from within Windows. I have not yet installed the new WiFi card, so I'm still able to boot into my Windows 8.1. Can I just modify the latest official BIOS update from Lenovo to install your modded BIOS instead of the one they provide?

I don't know, You an Downgrade to make result file and see again if Eeprom will be Unlocked !
I haven't found a solution for Error 280 so only SPI PGM !
