[Request] Additional Options - Acer Aspire 9500 - Insyde ACPI Bios 4.20.09 from 2005
#1
Hi, the original idea started in 2012, where I got told, my Insyde BIOS would be "too new" to be modded.

Mabye it changed ? I stumbled across donovan6000 his blog  for example :

Insyde Modding
http://donovan6000.blogspot.de/2013/06/i...-tabs.html

But still, even Andys Tool says "no Insyde Bios".

The original downloadable BIOS v1.70 that I flashed back then looks like this :

Here is the link to the BIOS :

http://www.acer.com/ac/de/DE/content/sup...ct/140?b=1

Its a Laptop where I would like to enable additional options and change the splashscreen.

Acer Aspire 9500 (Modell DQ70).

Mainboard: Compal Stork (Chipset i915PM/GM, Southbridge 82801FBM (ICH6-M)

Pentium M 760 @ 2 GHz

Insyde Software MobilePRO Version 4.20.10, using the "Acer HQD70" Bios 1.60. (512kb)

Right after startup it additionally says "Insyde ACPI Bios 4.20.09" short before initialising the HDD and the CD-Rom.

I made a backup of the 1.60 using the "Universal BIOS Backup ToolKit 2.0" but couldnt open it either.

Its UUID is : 61373537326131356136000FB0F07732

Firmware 101.114
Bios Date: 12/29/2005
Bios Starting Segment : EB00h

I gave up and I really hope someone else found a way in the meantime, as I just digged out this laptop once again. Smile

And reply is welcome.

Regards,
Boost

Found the very 1st BIOS for it, v1.30 from 2005 :

ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/../Archi...s/1.30.zip

With a hexeditor you can clearly read a lot inside the ROM file. You can find the a LZMA "header" (5D 00 00), but you cant unpack the file.

You can find a Boot Loader and you can find words like OSBLOGO or IMAG01. 1x in a list of words and 1x somewhere inside the ROM between a lot of data.
But in the very same order as in this list.

For example the data between OSBLOGO and USBCORE is 10kb. Enough for a small 4-16 color logo.

The data between IMAG001 and BOOTMSG is 31kb. Enough for a midsize 16 color Acer logo.

But I cant seem to find a graphic file header or something similar...either because of the LZMA compression or I dont know.

And the word PXEBIOS1 can be found a lot.

There is a tool (InsyDeco), a decompressor, from 2004 that lets you decompress Insyde BIOS .

insydeco.0.1.zip

http://biosgfx.narod.ru/insydeco/

Original Download link gone. See bottom of this post for the files

And there is the "Advanced BIOS Logo Reader" :

I compared entry and exit points of the example files I extracted from the ROM.

Which would be :

-PXEBIOS1 (24kb)
-PXEBIOS
(25kb)
-VGABIOS
(45kb)
-BIOS SCU (20kb)
-DISPSEG
(8kb)
-BOOTMSG
(1kb)
-F12MSG (2kb)
-IMAG001 (31kb)
-OSBLOGO (7kb)
-USBCORE (10kb)
-ACPIROM (3kb)
-ACPIDSDT (10kb)
-EXTOEM (3kb)
-SCU SRVR (10kb)
-PM PM (31kb) (Power Management Core ?)
-PCI BIOS (12kb)
-PNP BIOS (10kb)
-SYSBIOS (43kb)
-CPOEM (3kb)

-ABOCUS (? kb) - found only Entry Point, as the table that enlists all options is inbetween abocus and crisis

-CRISIS (? kb) -found only Entry Point

All have the same file "entry points" FF 88 filename 0C 88 and all end with different amount of FF FF FF FF

Found another guy with nearly the same Insyde BIOS for his TOSHIBA Laptop :

https://forums.mydigitallife.info/th...be-MobilePro-)

Exactly the same Bootloader 1.00.3 05/18/04

Exactly the same Boot Block 1.00. 11/03/00

But of course different file header per file "EE 88"...

Encryption/compression looks harmless as a lot o clear text can be found
and it is 1 megabyte ROM.

His laptop has same CPU, Pentium M 760 / 2GHz,
but intel GMA 915 instead of Ati Mobility X700

The "best" part is, the Insy Decompression tool does work with this BIOS.

Also Advanced BIOS Logo Reader can read all files from it.

Any help is appreciated.
You can downlaod the readable ROM here :

I managed to find similar and nearly identical MobilePRO BIOS files, used in other laptops,
that actually can be decompressed/viewed with the desired tools :

I even discovered a bios that looks like as if it has the same compression as mine and has "decompression routines" in the exe file.
Still, a long way to go...

Maybe its time to exchange parts from one BIOS with parts from another one...[Image: tasty.gif]

I was also able to find a tool called "BIOS Info Tool v1.3" by Serge Galkin from 2004 :

You can download it here :http://soft.mydiv.net/win/download-BIOS-Info-Tool.html

Except for an "incorrect" PCI IRQ Routing Table, it tells all infos,
even the ATI VGA BIOS A.09
and the Starting Adress Segment.
