Second hdd in Acer laptop instead of dvd drive. Bios problems
#1
Question
Hello,
I`ve bought this sata-sata optical bay caddy, installed in my Acer Aspire 5553g(it has only 1 place for hdd)

When I connect second hdd(using caddy), laptop freezes at bios POST checks, no errors, but when it should boot up Operating System nothing happens. As normally it shows Press F2 to enter setup. If I press it, laptop reacts, shows entering setup and again - nothing happens. I can`t even enter bios setup!!.

If I connect just 1 hdd, no matter which one or in caddy or not, everything works fine, hdd speed is good(so caddy works).

How to fix this ? I`ve struggled for two weeks without succes...
Now this laptop is very good for me, but slow hdd annoys every minute(had idea of getting ssd and hdd, or two hdds with raid 0).

Tried:
  • update bios to newest
  • format second hdd
  • connect second hdd on working laptop
  • changed various settings in bios setup, saved, just then connected second hdd.
  • press many times F2 to enter bios setup earlier
  • flashed modified bios(found on net) with many unlocked menus, also tried to change some values(but many of them I didn`t understood, and left untouched), no succes.
System:
hdd1: WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT SATA 3 Gb/s 2.5 Inch 5400 500 GB 8 MB
hdd2: Seagate Momentus ST9160310AS SATA 3Gb/s 2.5 Inch 5400.5 160 GB 8MB
DVD drive: hitachi-lg hl-dt-st DVDRAM GT31N SATA
Laptop: Acer Aspire 5553g AMD Phenom™ II triple-core mobile processor N830 (1.5 MB L2 cache, 2.10 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 35 W) more info: here
Chipset AMD™ M880G more info: here
Phoenix BIOS, latest official bios: here

Please help, I`ve already asked in 3 forums, got some answers but not solved the problem, I`m struggling two weeks with this already. Huh

HI ,

have you tried adjusting these options in your bios!

[Image: Untitled2%20%28AHMED-PC%27s%20conflicted...-12%29.png]

- ALSO IT MIGHT BE THAT YOU HAVE REACHED THE MAX. SUPPORTED SIZE OF THE HDD ( MIGHT YOUR BIOS CAN`T HANDLE MORE THAT 620 GB SPACE OF HDD ) IN THIS CASE , YOU WILL NEED YOUR BIOS TO BE PATCHED BUT FIRST TRY ADJUSTING THESE OPTIONS .

Hi Ahmed Hossam,
Yesterday I managed to borrow 120GB and 160GB hdds. So the hdd max size limit wasn`t reached. After I connected them - problem was the same.
Then I`ve tried to set up bios settings you`ve wrote. I`ve tried all of those settings one after another, exept this one, because there is no such setting in my bios:

Laptop still didn`t worked. Sad

Did this ever work?

I have a second drive and the caddy and this is not working.

Acer 5553 laptop ... BIOS is version V1.08

There is no option to apply power to SATA ports in an ACER BIOS but if there were no power then the DVD would not work in the first place.

Hi,
Nop, no success with second drive. Tried only that, what is described at this thread. After these tries, I have just used my laptop with 1 original hdd.

In addition to that, on 2016 march, my Acer 5553g died. Dodgy
