how to tell what cpu my bios currently supports
#1
Does the microcode in bios support a whole cpu range or are they instructions for individual cpu's?

I ask because I have an old asrock conroe865pe board running an e5400 pentium dual core @800fsb on the 1.72 modded bios (based on 1.71 beta bios from asrock), the board will run 1066fsb chips but underclocks the ram to do so so I have stuck with 800fsb chips so far.

The bios i have was found whilst googling conroe865pe and found a mention to r0 stepping chips working and a vague mention to the e5400 support. seing as the cpu was cheap i chanced it and it worked.

I recently got a great price on an e5800 3.2ghz cpu to try and squeeze the last ounce of life from this rig (used mostly as htpc) before i bite the bullet and finaly go modern for gaming but am not entirely sure if the modified bios i'm running will support the newer chip.

sorry if this is in the wrong place but my bios are ami

If i post a back up of my bios can someone here identify which chips it support from the microcode info and let me know if i'm going to be able to just drop this chip in.

I am pretty new to this kind of thing and have only ever done slp/slic mods in the past.

I want to know how derive cpu support from a bios.bin file as well.

To answer your and my own question there is a tool available online called intelmicrocodelist.exe that is run in a cmd prompt.
You type intelmicrocodelist.exe bios.bin-rom etc (whatever the name of your bios is) and it will list the microcode in the bios file.
