If anyone still needs this a friend unlocked it for me. Yeah they had to switch the advanced tabs with bbs Priority settings on the boot tab. was best sure fire way to get it to work. Switching for the main tabs didn't work that way. It would show the default anyway. I guess it was hardcoded into the alienware ui.
Anyway with it unlocked was able to set ram timings and frequency properly. and if you use a k cpu. you can set the power optons to maintain turbo to a point tho. I have a i7 4790k for instance. With default settings would drop down to 4000mhz with all cores in use. After increasing the power settings. Was able to maintain 4200mhz all cores. the ratio is... 1 core=44, 2 core=44 3 core=43, 4 core=42. No higher than stock ratios at least now it doesn't drop to 40 at all however.
would recommend using throttlestop to lower the voltages tho, that's the one thing the bios still can't do. I was able to lower offsets of core voltage and the cache by 50 millivolts as well as set vccin to 1.65 volts over the stock 1.8. I used stock cooler for a while temps were a bit hot but in a non destructive range. ThermalRight Peerless Assassin 120 Se I would also recommend for i7 4790k. Keeps temps around 50 degrees celsius most of the time.
Now that I understand bios modding a bit more now. In the future I'm going to attempt to see if i can get ddr4 ram to work on this board. it would be perfect since it only has 2 slots. would like 2x16gb ddr4 in there. I'll let y'all know how it goes. Wouldn't hurt to try.
Oh here's where to download the mod. Scroll to the bottom of the thread for the final mod version. you need Intel ME System Tools v9.1. Best to Use Flash Programming Tool DOS version. Boot from flash drive, Type command in dos fpt.exe -bios -f X51R2A12.BIN in order to flash it. use rufus to set up bootable drive.
