DELL Precision 690 microcode update
#61

Did you tried to use memory without risers?
Try to install 8 DIMM to slots 1-8.

i just removed the memory riser & populated the 8 slots from 1 to 8 with 4GB modules. same result! tried with one processor, works like a charm!
I tried populating one DIMM, & then 2 DiMM's, same result. tried with one processor, works like a charm!
any other ideas before I reassemble?

I just installed 2 X5355 cpu's on my My171 A00 motherboard with A08 bios with no problems. Booted right up. I was worried with the info I found online but I tried it anyway. I unplugged the power cord and removed battery during the switch. Plugged battery and cord back in when new cpu's were in place. Fired it up and it booted to windows. Had to reboot once more before Windows recognized the quad core. I hope this helps!

These quad's are not slow by no means and are quite powerful if you used two of them... I have ran the L5320 1.86Ghz 50W, L5335 2Ghz 50W... They are not any slower that I can tell from a newer E5405 1333 12MB cache xeon...

Only 50 Watts.. so like 30-45C load across all cores and it it's in the low 40s full tilt, I have seen it auto-overclock to almost 2.1Ghz on the L5320 from 1.86Ghz... Couple megahertz to the fsb when running really cool.

http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLA4Q.html - 06F7h - 1.86Ghz - plenty fast for 1080p gaming on a solid gpu on just 1 cpu.
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLAEN.html - 06FBh - 2.00Ghz - plenty fast for really anything you would realistically use it for.. especially 2x

I have two X5460 CPUs, so it's impossible to use these two CPUs in the latest revision of this board?

To get correct microcode for it set BIOS resetting BIOS Defaults Via the Reset Defaults Option:
Restart the system. Click on Start, Turn off Computer and Restart.

At the Dell loading screen Tap F2 to enter the BIOS. "Entering Setup" will appear when the command has been recognised. Certain models may use a different key. The key will be displayed during the boot process. For most Dell laptops and desktops, the key is F2.

Once loaded, depending on BIOS age and type, you can reset the defaults by either using F9 key to Load Defaults (Shown as an option at the bottom of the screen), the Alt + F key combination, or the Load Defaults button shown on the screen, to load the factory defaults.

Press Esc on your keyboard and select Save and exit, or click the Exit button, again depending on the version you have.

Choose the Enter key to save all changes and exit the BIOS screen. Allow your system to restart for the BIOS settings to reset.
