Dell Precision T7400 bios Rom
#41
I think I found the fault!

I run Dell Diagnostics utility, booted from USB and when testing in custom mode -> Test System Board it hangs!!!
Hangs after 8 tone sound!!!!! nothing can be pushed either cursor moves!!!!

What can I do with it???

Diagnostics of the memory pass without any issue!!!!

John, what do you think?

Shall I try to move processors and memory to other T7400 and try the same?

On testing Video it also hangs!!!!!

I'm getting out of my mind....

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS SYSTEM

Please look through my Posts. The link is there already. Make sure that the two curved slots are on your right. Count from the bottom the pads. On your right. When you get to number six and seven. Those are the pin pads to cover. One Note.
These are the Pin pads to Cover in the Dell T7400 Mother Board. Possibly only the 6th pin in other Intel 5400 chipset based mother boards. Could have made an error.
but the mod did not work with only pin pad 6 covered for me. When I covered both
6 and 7 bingo !

In fact those would be the pin pads to cover on any 1333mhz Quad core to fool the board that the chip is a 1600mhz chip. If a Mac Pro or Hp with a 1600mhz bus and proprietary mother board with no over clock bios options this mod works. Probably useful on a server board with 1600mhz bus.

The VID Mods look straight forward though have not needed to do this on the T7400. This the Voltage might explain my problems Overclocking X Quad Cores
on the T7400. Obviously from the intel Specs the E series Quads are advantageous. They run cooler. Which sugests they are more energy efficient with the same processing power as the Xseries?

Certainly 3.7 ghz from an old Boat Anchor is fantastic. Unless you are doing perhaps Cad or who knows what. How much processing Power is needed? Design a Transporter?
Rocket Ship? LOL !

Be patient. I have poor eye sight.

I Use a super sharp sheet rock cutting blade to slice of a thin long piece of black tape.

I place the tape on wax Paper over cardboard and a piece of wood. A couple of try's get a thin piece that just covers the pads.

Not the surrounding Pads on the bottom of the chip.

Then squeeze down with my left thumb. Trim at edge of chip with sharp blade.

Now It takes me just 5 minutes top's to do any chip. If that long. Today if I have time will play with a pair of Xeon 5050 Duals. Seeking the elusive 5GHZ on a T7400 with no Bios Options LOL !

Some body on this Board can come up with a Bios Mod for this Old Dell Boat Anchor. Please. Poor Man's Mac Pro LOL !

This mod most likely useful in my New Skull Trail. Lousy weather in NYC. Parts of Howard Beach Look like a War Zone in Syria. My area was Spared. Mail/UPS/Fed Ex Delays.

Elusive 5gh coming soon with a pair of old 771 chips.

Even a pair of single core 771 chips might do it. With prices so dirt cheap on these chips who would care frying a few in the process. LOL Maybe then 6gh and beyond !

NewEgg has a steal bought two EVGA 550 TI to upgrade my beast from the east T7400. Even if the rebate never arrives 103.00 each. If rebate shows up 89.00 Then SLI. Beats the old card's 8800gts Ultra. Also the new cards will go easy on the old PSU in this Beast. Might finally try a few video games. Free with purchase of Cards.

II did cover those pins, but bios shows that system is still running at 1333?
I have E5430 CPU and A11 version of bios, What I did wrong?

Good news, BIOS shows 1333Mhz, but Windows shows that CPU is running at 1600Mhz

However system still hangs-up.... :-(

John, can you please drop the recovery disk image to any torrent sites, I'll try to install original Vista on it, maybe this will solve my problems?

So, guys,
I've installed Windows 2008 SP2 on this machine, looks very stable, I've activated Windows Vista Theme with AERO, not like WIN7, but it's OK.
The problem now is BCDs (Blue Screen of Deaths) happens time to time, I think this is because I've cheated the motherboard to boot the CPU on overclocked speed, 1600MHz instead of stock 1333MHz without modding the power supply to it.

Windows 2008 R2 installation failed, I think it's due to the fact that R2 is based on Windows 7.

E5430 2.66Mhz runs at 3.2Ghz now.

Does anyone know how to increase voltage on the A11 BIOS revision? Any DELL BIOS Editor tools available, or any other understandible interpretation of BIOS for editing???

elik745i:

This may be a stupid question, but did you check that both CPUs are the same stepping? If they are not, it may explain your problems.
I have 3 Dell T7400 machines, each I upgraded to dual CPUs and they run like a dream.
The E5430 comes with at least 2 steppings, SLBBK and SLANU, it is written on the CPU so it's easy to verify.
Otherwise I don't see why you would have such problems. Windows 7 runs super stable on mine, I have some with 4GB, 2GB and 1GB memory sticks in there and no issues.
Will mod my 5440s and 5430s to 1600 FSB soon.

Thanks for reply, BSODs are chaising me......
I do not know why I can't install Windows 7 on it, but Windows 2008 runs fine now and I activated VISTA interface so no problem there.
When I put server under full load it gives up Blue Screen and says Clock interrupt on 2nd processor bla bla bla....
Is there a way to increase processor's voltage a bit to get them working more stable? Also if I did BSEL MOD how to get that bluddy SetFSB to recognize my processor and to work, I might reduse clock a bit to achieve more solid results?
Well, I did not verify this, however both machines were bought same time right from the manufacturer, so I suppose those are identical, here is screenshot from the BIOS:
Here is what CPU-Z says:

Here are screenshots:

Here is BSOD

Is there a way to soft increase CPU voltage or I need to go hard way and order conductive ink to do VID mod???

Mates,
I've written short tutorial on how to overclock XEON e54xx.
Can someone check and let me know if any changes need to be applied, I think now it's pretty simple to do it now.

Hi Everyone,
See this thread is getting busy. Sorry for not responding sooner. Have to check Spam filter. Today FINALLY have time to play. Working on a Dell 490
and taking pictures.

Will have to read carefully the problem Posts with the BSEL mod of the T7400. Modded 4 T7400's with the E5450 at 3.5.5 GHZ no issues. However have not stress tested the T7400 running 64 Bit Business Vista. Could be a windows version issue? Off the top of my Head.

Check all your FB Dimm contacts. Make sure they are shiny. Same with all the connectors to the sata Drives and video Card.

Luckily have the correct revision Board which takes quad Cores on the Dell 490's. First going through the several sets of 1333 Xeon Quad cores to see which ones work in the 490. Then going to take the $20.00 pair shipped Dempsy's 1066. 3.7 ghz.

Yup PAD MOD BESL from 1066 to 1333. Guessing ought to hit 4.5 ghz if the 490 boots ! Then to play with SetFSB. If it is stable in windows. This Mod

would be good for the owners of Dell Precision 490 which have earlier revision Boards. These boards will not take quad cores even with the latest BIOS. Hyper Threading on the Dual Core Dempsy gives you 4 threads. Sooo at 4.5 ghz or more might just perform like a Quad core on these Dell 490's !

If I have time. Then to but these old Dempsy's into a T7400. If they boot at 4.5 ghz. Re-do the BSEL mod. So they Jump from 1333 ghz to 1600 mhz
and keep my fingers crossed.

5.4 GHZ? On an Old boat Anchor !!!!!!!!!!! If it works. Will probably have to add fans. Or just leave the cover switch open. Hey it will sound like a jet engine the T7400. But I have a Zeon water block kit that came with a basically new Skull trail. Awesome board. Shame it does not fit into a Dell 490 case or the T7400. Waiting for a pair of Xeon X5470 1333 mhz quad.

Yup you guessed it. Pad mod to 1600 mhz. So 3.33 ought to boot pretty close to 4ghz on the T7400 if it works. The problem if their is one. Would be that the MICRO CODE of the cpu is not listed in the DELL Bios. But then this rather expensive pair $150. Shipped will most definitely work in the Skull Trail !

Now for about 26.00 plus shipping . Check this out. The conductive Pen Plus heat Sink Compound. Minimum order is $25. But the pen is the cheapest I have seen. Plus the Heat sink compounds sound interesting. have two small bottles of Artic Silver. But will run out fast LOL !

http://www.all-spec.com/products/CW2000....4AodOEkAxQ

Hey my usual Stuff works wonder's. But it almost requires a Crow Bar to get the Heat Sinks off once cured LOL !

Happy Modding and Happy Holidays ! ...................................John Great PDF thanks !!!!!!!!!!!! Looks good So far. No time but have a few bookmarks
of other illustrations. Plus will start to take Photo's of the modded chips and post here. Have to figure out how to post photo's. Probably just links to my photo bucket account.
