HP DV7 1279wm CPU upgrade strange results QX9300
#1
So I upgraded my CPU myself on my laptop ill post computer specs at bottom if my signature doesn't do it already. I installed an Intel Core2 Extreme QX9300 and at first it didn't boot the first two attempts but the third try it actually booted and i logged in to my desktop I opened CPUID CPU Z (whatever the program is called) to confirm if my computer or bios recognized it and set the correct settings. It did. But as the windowed displayed there my computer locked up. I'm not talking unresponsive desktop where I can move my mouse and point and click to no avail, I'm talking the mouse pointer did not move at all it was utterly frozen. So i took out my cpu and reinstalled it again to make sure maybe i didn't seat it correctly. This time it did not boot a couple of times and finally it booted in safe mode and i logged in checked CPUID again and it didn't recognize the correct CPU and it locked up again. After that i never got it to boot again with QX9300. I reinstalled my original CPU and I'm here on this forum with my original cpu posting this thread (my computer works fine with the original in fact I'm using it right now) wondering if it was compatible (It did get to the desktop afterall) or if maybe there's a bio issue. Basically my question is should I mod my BIOS or is there another course of action i should take?

First, while there is no mention of expanded CPU support, there are several newer BIOS from HP than what you're using. I would start there.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/previousVersions?softwareitem=ob-91571-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=3866489&sw_lang=

On a side note, I have the same laptop and I'm very curious as to what is the best CPU these can support. I've looked at some P8400's and those seem like they would be a direct drop-in upgrade. The only problem with using the QX9300 that I can see is heat.

Your only options to help the heat would be a better thermal compound (arctic silver, etc.) or somehow squeeze a bigger heatsink in there. I have not looked at the heatsink/fan first hand, but that's probably where I was going to start if I did a CPU swap.

Thanks for your response,
I've talked to a computer expert and he told me it's not likely it was a heating issue, because if it was a heating issue my screen would've just gone black and the computer would've shut itself off. My screen froze where it stood and stayed there without shutting off (the few times i made it to my desktop).
But I am curious about the bios update link you posted I would like to check that out.
Also I am so glad im not the only person using this model lol
my experience on the net has found no one with this laptop
(on a side note I have the PDF of the user manual of our laptop that list the (official) list of supported CPUs if you'd like to check it out, I say this because I'm pretty sure our BIOS has a whitelist of CPU's that it checks before startup) (But it's likely you already have the pdf lol)
