HP z230 and E3V4
#1
Hi,

I have a HP Z230 sff and a E3 1285v4. They all test good when use appropriate hardware(Booting Windows to Go. 4th gen I5 on z230, 1285v4 with a z97 board).

But will not boot when I put them together. The machine beeps 5 short time with power led blinking red, the pattern repeat itself.

The bios had been updated to HP's lastest version which can be found here.

Current BIOS has support for Haswell only.

I just didn't think it will go so catastrophically wrong. Once I tested 4980hq with elitedesk 800 g1, it only pop up a error message about missing microcode update or something, and press f1 the system just continue working until next boot. I think those processor just close enough, but didn't.

i7-4980HQ is Crystal Well. You can use it too.

Is there any way to solve this? I just wanna support ecc memory. use crystal well on the workstation or put the e3 in z97 won't enable ecc functionality.

There is no solution. You can use Xeon 1200 v3 series for ECC. But you can't use cheap registered memory with any CPUs.
