Lenovo G480 (20156) upgrade to i5-3230m
#1
Photo
around 3 months ago, my cousin gave me his used lenovo g480 (20156) with no processor (had overheating problem and removed, but he doesn't know the type). So recently i bought used intel core i5-3230m and put it in g480, i bought it because in internet, there are g480 model that use i5-3230m.
I use windows 7 64 bit and it works normaly, but after 25-30 minutes the laptop turn off, i tried to rebooting/restarted multiple times, but the turn off problem still occured.

here what i already do
-  tested processor i5-3230m with another laptop and it works fine (no turn off problem)
-  tested another intel processor (celeronb820 & b840) and it works fine to (no turn off problem)
so i think, its not broken hardware

in some internet forum , i read this happen because intel put something like lock function/timer function to prevent higer generation processor work in later generation chipset. In other forum, it said the function can be unlocked by mod bios or microcode, and thats how i get this website link

So, can anyone help me ?  what must i do to unlock or make bios mod? what must i prepare in case, its not worked? i'm really newbie in this stuff

i use 62CN40WW bios version

and here my notebook information, i used celeron b840, because to prepare this post it takes more than 30 minutes, and if i used 15-3230m it wouldbe turned off before i finished.

Thank you very much

Your notebook has HM70 chipset. HM70 has well known problem and can't run i3/i5/i7 more then 30 minutes.
Only hub(HM70) replacing will help. Or you can replace whole motherboard to new one with HM75, HM76 or HM77.
Another solution: put your laptop to sleep state every 25-29 min. This reset a timer. You can use Task Scheduler to do it.

Hi DeathBringer, thanks for your reply

So there's no way to make i5-3230m work in g480 then? there's no bios mod or micro code can unlock this intel limitation function?
Ok, i think i would sell this 3230 m and look for another processor, after all, it mustbe easier than replacing hub or wholemother board right?

i have another question though, what the highest/best processor that can be supported by hm70? I mean, beside the list i found in intel webpage, because, i didn't found celeron b840, and b820, but it still can works

thank you for answering Smile

None can solve this problem by editing BIOS.
The best processor for HM70 with Sandy Bridge core (32 nm) is Pentium B980, with Ivy Bridge core (22 nm) is Pentium 2030M.
