Modding Gateway NV BIOS
#1
Hi everyone!

I own a GATEWAY NV5302u, i bought it almost a year ago. I didnt have any problems with this machine.

The thing is that my battery died, so i thought i could buy a new one, and i start searching in the web for the battery model that fits to this machine, but i thought i could buy a bigger one. I looked for a 12 cell battery instead a 6cell battery.

The code of the original battery was a AS09A61 (6cell), but i did some research and according to many websites the replacement for this battery in a 12 cell was a AS07A31, and they were totally compatible.

Actually Gateway laptops use this batterys that are ment to be for many acer models, so i said, theres no problem about it, and i ordered it.

When the battery was in my hands, it fitted with no problem, and it actually worked!! but the mainboard refuses to accept it, it has some mensage at POST that says that the battery is wrong, so not even windows can recognice it and recharge it. so the first time it worked, but windows told me there were no battery present, and after that, it has discharged and it did not work again. Ive already tried to contact Gateway, and they tells me i must only buy the original code model battery.

But, as you can see... there are pleny of sites thats tells that AS09A61 and AS07A31 are the same.

Finally, if i could mod the bios so that it can accept this battery it would be great, cause it cost me like 100$, and i just cant throw it away.

Im am attaching the basic info and my actual BIOS file. I hope that i could get any help.

I haven't attempted this kind of modification before but I will look into it as best as I can to see where its running the check routine and hopefully bypass the check.

ill be very thankfull for that...

ive already tried a mod, but it was kinda unsuccesfull, what i did was to open both batterys and change the control chips, so that i could keep the new cells with the previous chip. It looks like the old chip its programmed to only charge like it would be a 6 cells battery, and im also still getting the message "you should change your battery", now ive got at least 1hr on battery use, even tough, when my 6 cell battery was new, it lasted at least 2 and a half hours, and theorically the 12 cell battery should last 4hrs. i was kind of desperate, so thats meassure i took, anyways, if i can mod the bios, i will be able to use the 12 cell with its original control chip..

Thank you so much for readin
