Optiplex 7050 8th gen support
#1
Hello there, I'm a bit of a newbie around here, thanks for letting me join your community.

I've seen that some magic has been possible with the Optiplex 7060 to enable higher gen support to the BIOS so I'm asking if one of you BIOS mod expert around here can do something for the Optiplex 7050.

I have one laying around at the moment and I use it for daily driving, I'd like to do a bit more gaming with it though and I was thinking of a CPU upgrade, it came with an i7-6700, I know I can upgrade to a 7700 without modifications but I'd love to rock a 6 or 8 cores CPU on it and the 7th gen doesn't seem to have any CPU that has more than 4 cores...

All I know for sure at the moment is that the Optiplex 7050 uses an LGA 1151 socket and a Q270 chipset.

I found contradicting information on the internet that could lead me to believe it could be modded to support 8th or even 9th gen CPUs but that it could involve pin mods on the CPU, I'm ready to go through it if it that is what it takes, it seems that it'd be easier with a 300 chipset but I like modding stuff around for better perfs even though I have never tried to use bios mods before, I'd like to give it a try Smile

So I come to you guys to know what can really be done with the Optiplex 7050 because for now all the info I found did not seem to very reliable and your modding community seems to achieve a lot of cool stuff so I figure at least some of you must be knowledgeable to figure if something can be done Cool

Thanks in advance for reading my request and taking some time to reply to it  Heart

I'm sorry I didn't read the README and my post is lacking some key informations:

- Bios link: https://www.dell.com/support/home/fr-fr/drivers/driversdetailsdriverid=kmhpc&oscode=wt64a&productcode=optiplex-7050-desktop

Whats happens(I.e. It doesn't boot / it shows an error): Nothing happens for now because I haven't tried putting a known to be unsupported CPU on the mobo and I don't actually own one at the moment...

Sorry for not providing all the informations I could in the first place, I know I haven't provided the informations about the CPU I'd like to put in there but I haven't bought it yet because it'd be of no use to me if it wouldn't work, I hope we can still sort something out without it...

Current BIOS has active Boot Guard.
So support of Coffee Lake can't be added.

Aw, bummer,is it something I can disable or is it baked into the BIOS? Is Boot guard like secure boot or is it something different? I'm kinda surprised the 7060 did not have it but the 7050 does...
Sorry for asking all these questions but I'd like to learn a thing or two from this even if I can't do my dream upgrade  Smile

Only re-soldering a new(!) chip of Q270 can help.

Optiplex 7060 has it too.

If 7060 has it how have you been able to modify the BIOS for it? Is it only enabled on certain devices and not on others depending on what the customer who bought it first asked from DELL when buying it? Huh

I don't have the skills or tools to do that kind of soldering sadly but I have another 7050 that I stored at my parent's place could it have it not enabled? Even if it came from the same batch (not same form factor tho)?...

My mod for Optiplex 7060 refers to unprotected part of its firmware.

Sorry to bother, I have read some threads of 3040m and 7050 that their BIOS cannot be modded to support an advanced cpu because of boot guard.

But how come the BIOS of similiar model: Optiplex 3060 in this thread could be modded and support the 9th CPU that was originally unsupported?

https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-D...ort?page=2

Thank you for your time.
