Pegatron M2N68LA/HP Narra5-GL6: CPU Upgrade
#11
The 955 has a 125W TDP however - I think these boards were rated at 95W

I have experienced the same thing and after much searching i found someone on ebay selling the narra5 board with a rev 6.0 bios, i have compared the specs of the narra6 uk ver and they are the same, chip set, lay out ect... and it does not have the Am2+ limitation but still TDP:95W

narra5 mother board http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum...=c01701270&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=4006002

PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)
Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
Supports 2GB DDR2 DIMMs
Supports up to 4 GB* on 32 bit PCs

to be able to go from the:

Phenom X4 9850 B3 2.5 GHz 4x 512 KB 2 MB 2 GHz 12.5x 1.20 - 1.25 95 W AM2+ October, 2008 HD9850WCJ4BGH to the

is a little jump in power.

I have the bios for the narra6 file sp46431, do you think it may work on the narra5 board? or is the AM2+only just really misleading?
take a look let me know

If anyone can give me a couple CPU's that will work with my setup i would be forever grateful. At this point i just want anything a few steps up from what i have, so long as it is guaranteed to work. Being that these CPU's are so old the only reasonably priced ones i can find are on Ebay, where in most cases refunds due to incompatibility are not accepted. Geez sorry for the wall of text i just really want this upgrade behind me so i can play a few games with a steady framerate. If any other information is needed just ask. Thanks guys.

I have this same board, as many HP/Compaq owners do on the more inexpensive models. It's power is lacking nowadays in comparison, but this thing has ran flawlessly for me over the years, even for gaming when I wanted. The model I have is:

Model:
Presario CQ5110Y
Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.5 GHz (7550)
Video: Galaxy (crap, this is the 3rd one through RMA's) GT240 1gig. Plays well now, after a 3rd unit...
4 gigs ram (paired for dual channel).

Just so I can notify you if this works... I wanted to test a cheaper model of processor with the ability to unlock it on a better motherboard in the future... I just recently purchased the following to start gaming again on this board (I'm obsessed with the way this desktop looks... I have no idea why HAHA, and i'm also a cheap [censored]).

Ordered:
AMD Phenom II X2 B59 CPU 3.4GHz HDXB59WFK2DGM for $53.00 on EBAY with a proven 4 core unlock. Seller is credible.

This is the last Phenom II made I believe, but don't quote me on that. It's 80w TDP. In theory this should work with this board, even though it's "Not Supported" from their list, published in 2009. Even though this chip was made in 2011, AMD had backwards compatibility in mind. This chip is not the "Black Edition", and meets the requirements of the board, and is AM2+ compatible. More than likely it will likely show up as a different processor in the bios perhaps, at the proper frequencies. Keep in mind, the perfect TDP = 95 for this board. I'm not sure how good this 80w will be, but it's gotta be better than where I'm at now. The more power hungry, usually the more processing power (when comparing Phenom chips).

The OS should find it normal as a Phenom II X2. Keep in mind, this happens quite a bit with boards. It may not show up properly in the bios, but as long as the core frequency/multiplier is good, it should be safe to boot it. Again, even though this isn't the most powerful processor in it's "X2" state, it blows away whats currently in there. It also is a proven "core unlocking" processor. I plan on buying a new ATX board eventually that will allow core manipulation. If this does not work, I'll be upgrading the motherboard sooner than I thought. Smile

Video card ordered:
ZOTAC ZT-61008-10M GeForce GTX 650 1GB from newegg.com. I ordered this because I do not have to boost the power requirements, and I'm all about that!

Basic OEM cooler for the Phenom was ordered too. Also ordered a new 320gig hard drive, sata-II 3gb/s (top specs for this board anyhow), at 30 bucks I couldn't pass...

After I'm done upgrading (will test only processor first and go through a burn phase to ensure it won't crash on me), I will post to here.

Here's my BIOS.  Opteron 1352 & 1389 show CPU unsupported yet are within the TDP allowance.

Can you CBROM the microcode for 1352 & 1389?

Thanks

Post a screenshot of third (Mainboard) tab of CPU-Z with any CPU.
Show a photo of the screen with error "CPU unsupported yet are within the TDP allowance".

Thank you for the reply sir.

I think I know what the problem is and if you can help, great!

CPU AMD Opteron 1389 Microcode is there as it shows the CPU as AMD Opteron 1389 Quad-Core 2.9Ghz.

Shortly after says CPU Unsupported must shut down.

Board said to only support 95W CPU's. However I had this issue on Biostar MCP6PB-M2+ with this AMD Opteron 1389. Said CPU Unsupported Max 95W. All I did to fix this is pop in different CPU, disable Cool N Quiet in BIOS. Installed 1389, worked and works still today perfectly.

So may you look into my BIOS and either unlock the "Cool N Quiet" Option or Simply Disable it in the .rom?

Thanks

Sure thing man, only problem is it boots for about 2 seconds and shuts off (shows post for 1 second and CPU unsupported for another second, that's all)... no time to get to windows and get screenshots in 2 seconds haha Wink

I found a Foxconn M61PMV laying around... just to test it, it says 95w max and is Nvidia 6100 not 6150se like M2N68-LA.

Popped in some high density ram and the Opteron 1389, and it works perfectly. So I think the HP Bios just needs Cool N' Quiet Disabled to fix the error only possibly. Highly experimental as always. Wink

Two seconds are enough to make a photo with error.
If you haven't supported CPU then you can't to flash modded BIOS.

CTRL then F10 for Advanced BIOS. No sign of Cool N' Quiet. CPU Microcode is there, just believe we need to bypass TDP Limit. By a method you know of? Or Enabled Hidden Options/ Disable Cool N' Quiet. Thanks
