Please help with asus black screen (no logo, no bios)

Scenario:


Laptop ASUS x550JK (i5, Intel HD 4600 + Nvidia 850M)  upgraded to SSD and second HDD added (with CD/DVD to SATA adapter)

The motherboard model is X550JD Rev. 2.0

Windows 10 installed and tested OK.

Bios changes: Boot devices order

Save changes and exit.

After reboot the screen is black, no ASUS logo , no bios access.


Recovery test:

Latest bios  version downloaded from here: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/X5...KAS303.zip

File renamed from X550JKAS.303 to X550JK.bin

File X550JK.bin pasted to USB flash drive formatted to FAT

VGA/HDMI cable connected to external monitor.

I have pressed the power button and CTRL+HOME keys. (USB flash drive connected to USB 2.0 port)

The USB flash drive led blinked 5 seconds approximately but without changes on the screen.



Any suggestion?

Try reformat with windows simple right click format, to FAT32
Then put BIOS original file there and the renamed one, and a third one named X550JK.rom - all in root of USB

Smaller USB is better, you may need to try several small cheap ones until you find one that works good.

Remove both hard drives for now until you get this sorted out, and test both on another system to be sure OK. I say remove for now, in case one is shorting or causing this issue, or source of initially causing this issue, since you said OK until you changed boot order (invoking a different drive than what was previously running OK without this issue happening)

Yes, I saw that name in the BIOS itself too. Did you reformat the drive using simple windows right click to FAT32? You may need to try other USB, some are not compatible, often it's hard to find one that is compatible sometimes.

If you end up not being able to get it, you'll have to order a hardware programmer, like CH341A flash programmer ($2.50 on ebay), and SOIC8 test clip cable ($3.50 on ebay) or a kit like EZP2010 or EZP2013

Flash drive 4GB formatted to FAT and FAT2 and x550jk.bin file -- nothing

Flash drive 4GB formatted to FAT and FAT2 but wit 512Mb partition created on the flash drive and x550jk.bin file -- nothing

Flash drive 8GB formatted to FAT and FAT2 and x550jk.bin file -- nothing

Flash drive 8GB formatted to FAT and FAT2 but wit 512Mb partition created on the flash drive and x550jk.bin file -- nothing

SD card 256MB and 512MB FAT/FAT32 with USB card reader and x550jk.bin file -- nothing

Needs to be USB, or sometimes you can also create FAT32 partition on main HDD. For best results with USB on Asus, I've found 256MB-2GB best, smaller and cheaper/older = better.

No FAT or FAT2 (unless you meant FAT32?) Are you formatting with windows right click? If not, then please try that, but it's possible your 4 and 8GB drives are too large/new. Sometimes new/large is OK, all depends on the system, how new it is, what they put in the BIOS for compatibility etc.

It could be corrupted too badly to recover even with known working USB that you used on this system for this process before (If you had done it before I mean, as example), it can be that badly messed up. I don't think it is though, since you said it read one of your USB for a few seconds, that's usually incompatible drive or wrong format/file name/type.

You have put all these on there already correct? If yes, please leave or copy all these on there for each/any test you do, that way you are not missing any chances with wrong file name/type

And now, speaking of capsuled file above! Here is the non-encapsulated file. Try with that too, in place of X550JK.bin. Since renaming stock file to X550JK.bin is incorrect, that is still a capsule (.cap) file, the BIOS below is not, see the 2kb file difference. This may solve it all, use the USB stick where you saw the LED's flash previously for 5 seconds!

With this file the  led blink 2 (times)  x 5-6 seconds. File renamed to .rom, .bin, etc...
