Upgrade CPU on msi GX740
#11
OK. This motherboard has three phases for CPU. And cooling system works good.
So you can try to use quad cores CPU without fear.
Are you sure that your i7-740QM isn't dead?

Try to flash my mod with updated CPU microcodes.

I don't think so the i7-640M or i7-740QM is dead, but the laptop don't want to start.
But it works with the original i5-460M processor and the one that currently has i5-560M.

But I have un BIOS unlocked actualy on the laptop, you think is that the problem ?

Just test my mod with these two CPUs.

Try this algorithm:
1) disconnect power cord
2) disconnect all HDDs and optical drives
3) remove all SODIMMs and CMOS Battery
4) install new CPU
5) wait 10 mins
6) press and hold power button for 30 sec.
7) install CMOS Battery and one SODIMM only in first slot.
8) connect power cord (without Main Battery!) and try to power on.

Hi DeathBringer,

I had a problem with the Windows upgrade for a very very long time and I finally found why the laptop doesn't upgrade the version ...
I have to disconnect the wifi card to perform the upgrade and it's working ....

It's been over 2 years I have this problem, each new version of Windows 8 to 8.1 or 10 I had to do a clean install.

I hope this will help other people when the Windows upgrade fails

Have you seen my PM ?

It's offtopic.

I don't modify someone else's BIOS mods.

Test my mod or it will be deleted as useless, because I think that original BIOS has support for i7-740QM.

Sure no worries.
Yes, I will test your BIOS this weekend or next week.
Ah? You think it's the unlocked BIOS that can be a problem for i7-740QM.

I'll let you know if I can do it before that.

Hello DeathBringer,

I tried with the original bios msiGX740, it doesn't work for these two processors.

I tested with your bios and it does not work either.
- With the i7-640M, the notebook starts up, but the screen stays black immediately and nothing else, the power button light stays on.
- With the i7-740QM, the notebook will not start and the POWER button light will turn off immediately.

Hi BeathBringer,

I don't think these CPUs are dead (and I hope too), because they don't produce the same result when I install them on the motherboard.
But I'm not an expert like you.
I will try to test it on other notebook for be sure.

Hello DeathBringer,

I have check the i7-640M processor on another laptop, and it works.
So I have check the i7-640M processor again on my MSI GX-740 and it works too, however I didn't do anything more than before.

Still not OK for the i7-740QM.

Cordially
