Would an i7 3840QM work on HP DV6 6080ee??
#1
Hey all! I am new to laptop upgrading, but I am in need for it as I don't have the cash to buy a new laptop, and mine is getting old.
I have ab HP DV6 6080ee. It has this hardware:

  • Intel HM65 Express Chipset
  • Intel i7 2630QM
  • Switchable Graphics: Intel HD 3000 & Radeon HD 6670M
  • 6gig RAM
  • 128 gig SSD
  • 720 gig HDD

Also, currently:
  • Running Windows 7 x64
  • BIOS: Insyde H20 Rev 3.5 - Version F.1B

I want to upgrade everything possible, so the CPU, RAM, and will add eGPU.
My questions are, would my laptop run an i7 3840QM processor? It has the same sucket and some websites listed it as HM65 compatible, but I am still not sure. It is 45w processor and goes in G2 socket. My board has G2 and accepts 45w CPUs. It is Ivy Bridge though (22 nm) while my current CPU is Sandy Bridge (32 nm).
If this CPU doesn't work in my case, what is the best CPU I can upgrade my laptop to?
Also, would my board run more than 8gig of RAM? Am I able to put 2x8gigs for example?
Thanks in advance

HM65 chipset doesn't support CPUs with Ivy Bridge. So you can't use i7-3840QM in this laptop.
i7-2860QM is best compatible CPU.

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I thought this is correct, and know that the i7-2860QM is the best option, but the CPU support list of Mobile Intel® HM65 Express Chipset on Intel's website made me confused (follow the link and click on Compatible Products on the left):

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...ipset.html

They list CPUs like the i7-3615QE and i7-3612QE which are Ivy Bridge as HM65 compatible. How is this possible?

Do not pay attention to it. You need special motherboard and special CPU to implement it.

Ok, I understand thanks. Any advice about the RAM?

Try any 8GB SODIMMs with 8 chips on each side.
