Well, I've tried:
1. flashing BIOS, leaving g630, reboot
boots fine

2. flashing BIOS, leaving g630, resetting CMOS, reboot
first boot, flashes orange, beeps five times
upon next reboot, boots fine

3. flashing BIOS, installing 3770k, reboot
flashes orange, beeps four times, won't boot

4. flashing BIOS, installing 3770k, resetting CMOS, reboot
flashes orange, beeps four times, won't boot

?????

What RAM modules are u using? Try remove each one and try boot with one RAM chip. Sorry I've no idea what's going wrong. Technically from what I can see the G630 shouldn't boot with that bios so I'm out of ideas.

Sorry I couldn't of been more assistance, I'll have a look during the next few days.

This is my first BIOS mod so I'm sorry I'm not able to troubleshoot this too well.

Here's the latest dump, check to see if the G630 code got added back in somehow.

I really appreciate your taking time to help...

Hi again, iv'e re-modified your BIOS, this time I have managed to ADD the microcode, so both CPU's should work, ive put the Ivy microcode at the top of the module, it might help. Anyway try this one. This BIOS should work with BOTH processors.

Please report back

Thanks

Ps, i checked your latest dump, there was NO G630 microcode there, which is confusing. Possibly your dell has 2 BIOS chips?? Anyway try this one

Also, try toggle your bios override jumper, might help?

Forgot to mention, have you tried different RAM modules? Because 4 beeps is a RAM error, could be possible that your RAM isn't compatible with Ivy Bridge, just a thought?

I've tried again, same results. Also, I've tried jumpers in various positions, I've booted with the G630 and the 3770k in various states. I don't have a clue why this won't work. Is it something special from Dell?

Hi.

Sorry I'm out of ideas, I think another version of microcode is encrypted in another module??

Just to add a little info to the subject:  I've been trying to do nearly the same thing with my 2320.  I have an i7 3770-s processor that should be compatible with the 2320 motherboard.  It uses the same LGA 1155 socket and H61 express chipset.

I have managed to download and extract the appropriate microcode files from the intel microcode.dat file and add it to the bios using mmtool.  I successfully flashed the bios using AFUwin, shut down and swapped out the i5 2400-s cpu for the i7 3770-s and rebooted, but the system fails POST.  I get the same orange light and series of beeps as ibihab does.  I'm stumped.

I've attached the modded .rom file I created in case anyone is interested.

Wow, cool. I'm glad to see another 2320 user! I like the machine enough to keep it around the house.

It just seems that Dell doesn't want to support older hardware and refuses to update something as simple as a processor update to the BIOS. I'm beginning to think that Dell has done something to lock us out.

My son's older i5 2500k may end up getting an upgrade if we can't figure this out. Bummer for me...

Daricles, have you tried the files from this post? If not, try it and let us know if it worked for you!
