MSI X58M Xeon Microcode Problems
#1
Hi!

I'm having some very weird problems with my MSI X58M (MS-7593 Ver: 1.1) motherboard using BIOS version 3.8.

BIOS link: http://download.msi.com/bos_exe/7593v38.zip

Until today it ran perfectly fine with an i7 920 D0 @ 4.0GHz (200x20) @ 1.27V Vcore & 1.26V QPI

I had another x58 system with a Gigabyte EX58-UD3R and a Xeon X5670 @ 4.0GHz (200x20) @1.30V Vcore & 1.25V QPI that ran perfectly!
Today i took the X5670 out of that Gigabyte and put it into the MSI board.

The MSI board does not like the X5670 at all!
It doesn't even post with a BLCK of 200, the QPI voltage set to 1.3V and a Vcore of 1.3V no matter what multiplier.

I'm getting weird bootloops with settings that should be no Problem for any 1366 Chip and the memory speeds do not affect it one bit either.

If i set the QPI Voltage to auto it does post but it then goes up to 1.42V QPI which kills the 32nm Westmeres in no time

I can not understand why this is happening and i am wondering if somebody please could look into the BIOS to find out if the Microcode for the 32nm Westmere Xeons is even in there... It detects it correctly, but something is definitely not right here.

Also on stock settings with auto Vcore on, every boot the vcore is different (0.9-1.34V !!!) ... This is not normal!
The X5670 didn't have this Problem on the Gigabyte Board, neither did the i7 on the MSI.

Thank you so much!

Install X5670 into EX58-UD3R and i7-920 into X58M. Make and post screenshots of first (CPU) and third (Mainboard) tabs of CPU-Z from two systems.

X5670 has CPUID=206C2.
BIOS for MSI X58M version 3.8 has microcode for this CPUID version 13, date 09/07/2010.
BIOS for Gigabyte EX58-UD3R version F12r has the same microcode.
Did you try "Load Fail-Safe Defaults" or "Load Optimized Defaults"?

Did many CMOS resets, tried pretty much all settings i can think of, this CPU on this board just requires an insane ammout of QPI voltage to even post on any higher BCLK.
Never had this issue with X58. I have a P6T7 WS SC as well, never had to use more than 1.27V QPI on anything x58...

I thought it was acting weird and thought it would not be recognised properly (it does say Xeon X5670 during POST on the MSI)

If it's not a BIOS issue, i don't know what it is... it however is really frustrating...

Do you have any idea what might cause this?

Don't overclock, try all defaults.
P.S. BIOS for P6T7 WS SuperComputer version 1001 has the same microcode.

It works non overclocked, as long as i don't change the memory speed to anything higher than 1066 ... 1333 or 1600 (native) and it bootloops

This thing is so sketchy with the Xeon installed, while it works perfectly with the [censored] i7 that uses way more power...

I don't get it, why is this thing so incredible unstable??!

Post screenshots of Memory and SPD tabs (for each DIMM) of CPU-Z from X58M system.

Will soon, but it's not the memory!

Currently only 1 DIMM is installed.

These i have tested individually:
2x 4GB Crucial Ballistix 1600 CL 9-9-9-24 1.5V
2x 4GB GEIL 1600 CL 11-11-11-28 1.5V
2x 4GB 1600 CL 11-11-11-28 1.5V
6x 8GB Corsair XMS 3 CL 11-11-11-30 1.5V

They all work perfectly fine @ 1600 with the i7 920 @ 20x200 , they also all work with the Xeon @ 20x200 on my other two boards

They also all work with the Xeon on the MSI as long as it's on it's stock 133x22 CPU clock and the memory is set to 1066.

I need the screenshot for "Xeon on the MSI" with this default values!
