Lenovo M5400 CPU upgrade
#1
Hello, i have a question about possibility to upgrade CPU in my Lenovo M5400.
Now I have i5-4200M (dual-core) and I want upgrade to i7-4712QM (or i7-4702QM) (quad-core). All CPUs has same 37 Watts TDP and it is also support by my HM87 chipset.

Some reasons makes me nervous about it:
1. My laptop has no modification with quad core i7 CPU. In hardware mantainance manual exist only dual-core CPUs.

2. My laptop have BM5 DA0BM5MB8D0 rev: D motherboard. In datasheet for this Quanta BM5 platform is written (look at processor block):
(Processor : Daul Core)

Does it mean what my motherboard has no hardware support for quad-core i7 CPUs? I want to upgrade CPU but don't want to buy not working piece of silicon for ~250$.
Please, if someone knows more about it, let me know.

You can use at least i7-4702MQ - https://hwbot.org/submission/2945221 (press XTU Hardware)

Wow, so interesting. Thank you for searching this info.
Can i use it without BIOS modification? And this data from Lenovo B5400, it has H86 chipset. Does it matter?

BIOS mod isn't needed.

Big thank you for you answers. I'll very likely buy 4702MQ, i think that don't really need to experiment with Haswell Refresh for 100Mhz.

Hello all,

I landed on this forum as I'm in need of some magic regarding the switch from the i5 4200M to i7 4700MQ on my Lenovo M5400.

I found some machines on the interweb that are running the 4700MQ but did not receive any info regarding the BIOS.

I already attempted to swap directly but it's not posting, just some erratic fan movement. Having in mind that this proc has a higer TDP I'm guessing the motherboard needs to be instructed to allow the higher power consumption.

Attached is a link to my current BIOS and setup:

Any help would be highly appreciated.
