Toshiba Tecra M11 looking to pay to add Quad core CPU
#1
Hello

Looking for someone who could modify BIOS on paid base to get support to quad core CPU for Tecra M11-13W.
Currently it's running on Intel Core I7-620M  CPU-Upgrade: Intel Core i7-620M (PGA988) CPU,
cooling system is upgraded to support quad core CPU - Intel I7-840QM  CPU-Upgrade: Intel Core i7-840QM CPU
Mother board base on intel QM57 chipset  CPU-Upgrade: Intel QM57 Express chipset processor support

Also, according to intel specification QM57 chipset could support up to 16GB ram. Currently it's limited to 8 gb (4+4). Any possibility to add 16gb memory support?

Thanks

Try to find and install i7-720QM (or i7-820QM).
Explain exactly what happens when you try to boot with new CPU.

I have on hand I7-840QM, mentioned by you - in my area impossible to find (unless to purchase from China) (howerever both of them still 45W TDP).
As per my understanding, Toshiba did not include in support list 45W CPU, system is designed for 35W CPU support only.
There is was no any Tecra M11 series (or any Tecra with 45W CPU support, unfortunately). Those CPU was supported on Qosmio series)
I did test sometimes back, as far as i remember - just black screen, same when i was testing 16GB ram. My feelings according to temperature of CPU and chipset - system could accept physically and most probably electrically, but don't want to boot because not recognized by bios.

I think the reason is the hardware limit of motherboard's power subsystem.
BTW: CPU with Arrandale core has TDP 25W only, when integrated graphics are disabled.

Have question, if bios does not have information about CPU - will system start? If start - how it will look like?
Same about memory?

Power difference we are talking about only 10W. Because there is Tecra from same series which used only integrated GFX.
It might be overhitting - if not enough cooling capacity, but having not enough current to start - does not look like.

From power side - there is plenty capacity still available - because full options include 3G modems, PCMCI extensions, and e.t.c

From other side i'm 200% sure that there is no mentioned or "supported" in BIOS for 45W CPU and 16GB memory support.
Usually in such cases system and not staring, but chipset are keep warm.

All(!) BIOS with support of Arrandale core have support of i7-720QM and i7-820QM.
But they can't start in most cases because of laptop's motherboard design.

No, about 20W. Check CPU tab of CPU-Z - your i7-620M has 25W only (with disabled integrated graphics).
So VCC_CORE lines are designed for 25W and VCC_iGFX line are designed for 10W.

This revision of motherboard can't boot CPUs without integrated graphics.

You need to find a electronic schematics of this motherboard for checking "capacity" of VRM for VCC lines.

CPUs with Arrandale core support 8GB (4+4) only.
CPUs with Clarksfield core support up to 32GB (8GBx4).
