[Request] Dell Inspiron 17r SE 7720 Unlocked Bios
#51
There is a new BIOS for Inspiron 17R SE 7720 - 7720A15BIOS.exe. I have the 3D version of this laptop and DELL has made it run the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M by default. I'm trying to find out if there is a way to access/enable the Intel Graphics chip using your (Oleh) modded BIOS. I'm guessing not since I think Optimus is required for GPU shifts in Windows. If anyone who was successful or knowledgeable could respond I'd be grateful. I have seen some were successful (no brick) using this mod. Thanks to Oleh. I'm already using A15, so I guess it would have to be modded. Thanks for any information.

Hi,

Since i have some problems with the Nvidia GPU not showing and Dell not trying to take any haste in fixing this i tried a modded bios.

A poster on the Dell forums mailed me the .rar file of the modded A12 bios. The only thing i probably did wrong was not downgrading to the official A12 bios before updating the modded A12.

Now i bricked my laptop at it won't go any further than some blinking lights. The screen won't lit up and the post is not showing.

It seems similar like in the first posts on the 1st page. However, the 'recovery kit' link doesn't seem to work. And i would hope that it contains a clean bios file.

I allready dusted of some old Windows XP laptop who made me a good USB drive with the 3 files on it, i used the modded A15 file, since it's the only file i could find that should atleast have a bios file in it that is suppose to work on my Dell 7720 SE

But since the A12 didn't work, the A15 might not work as an fix either.

So anyone who could get me a standard BIOS.WPH? I don't know it it matters with A*biosversion* it is... On the Dell website i can only get .exe files that can't be extracted...

Please help....

Hello!

I think, there is a real possibility to do a crisis rescue. I have pulled out battery and the power-cord, then inserted a fat32 formatted usb-stick with the original Bios.cap (sized 13.313 KB) , copied from %temp% (paused bios flash in Win8) to stick.

During holding the End key I have inserted back the power-cord and then released the End-Key. The fan has begone spinning at full speed for about 2 minutes and then began the shell flash routine with success post. Then screen has become black again. There has been no automatic reboot.

After some minutes I have unplugged the power-cord and reinserted it . After controlling the bios settings and saving them, Win8 booted normally. What I also have to tell, is, that my device had not being bricked. The Pmpatched Bios.cap has not passed the test.

I think, that the Bios.cap has to be the same version, that is installed. I hope, I can help with this post to revert some bricked devices.

Original A15 Bios.cap is attached.

Have fun and greetings from insanelymac.com!

Thank you for this advice to flash the bios! I still own A03 and never updated the bios because of all the problems. Not sure though if the latest A15 isn't faulty as well so didn't try this version.

The Dell forums tell that A15 still doesn't fix any GPU problems.. Terry (someone from dell) told us they are working an a fix (although that should have been A15).

But we (at the dell forum) have been waiting for months allready...

There is no way to get the HD4000 working, because there is not the hardware of it. If you extract the acpi tables and look in ssdt5 you can find there a routine, which discovers the version of the SE7720. If the 3d version is dedected it jumps to activate it. On the other versions Optimus is activated or if something is wrong with it, the HD4000.

i am fixing a laptop its a dell 7720, anyways it was 1st stuck at the f12 screen, would not go any further no matter what keys i mashed. so i removed the cmos battery, its beeped alot but it got me into the bios setup, i quicky set the settings to legacy , becasue i want to rid this computer of win8 and install win7, it booted to the logon screen of win 8, so i inserted a usb stick with win 7, and rebooted, and mashed f12 to boot usb drive, now it will not go into bios again or f12 boot device, so i removed the laptop's 1tb hd and formatted it on another, deleted all the partitons. put the hd back in the laptop to boot the usb win 7, it will not boot anywhere further than the dell logo and press f12. i again removed the cmos battery, same, its stuck. i am not sure what i can do to install windows now. bios does not let me enter it. it worked earlier. any suggestions, is there a way to flash the bios by usb or something. anybody have any suggestions. not sure what to do now

My post #54 could be a solution for your problem. You should give it a try.

@Oleh

Thanks for these unlocked bioses. I have the 17r SE 7720 with the 3630QM. Will these work for me? I have read in other places that these will not work with the 3630QM. Would you be willing to make one compatible with the 3630QM? Your consideration is very much appreciated.
