Vizio CT14 - Bios Fan Temperature Mod
#1
Hello, I've searched all across google and it led to this wonderful website.

I learned quite a bit, I do not want to brick my laptop.
If someone verifies my current steps for errors, I will send you or this website money equivalent to a beer upon successful results.

To create the mod I opened the bios with AMIBCP and the only change I made was the fan temperature turn on point.
I changed the values of 55*c to 63*c
  • Whenever resaving from the originally dumped bios file in AMIBCP, I noticed that the embedded windows cd key disappeared in resaved bios file. The windows key was normally found at hex offset "00350000". The data where cd key was present was replaced and blanked out into FF FF FF's

Should I be worried about the missing cd key? Should I manually reenter the cd key at hex offset 0035000?

I compared the modded and original bios in MMTOOL. The only difference with the two bios file was the AMITSE module.

Heres an update guys. I went ahead and flashed the update.

I am feeling wonderful because my laptop isn't bricked, but the changes had no effect. The fan still seems to turn on above 55*C for whatever reason. I also tried enabling the 2nd advanced menu in a subsequent flash by setting the desired toggles to user in AMIBCP but that had no effect either.

That is a shame because idling this laptop hovers at 50*C. And turbo for a few seconds it hits 57-58*C. That 63*C fan point would work wonders.

I guess the next place to enable the advanced menu would be the setup module, but I could not find the corresponding binary table to flip the switch using a hex editor.

Running the setup module through the IFR extractor I get the following form table

Quote:Form Sets
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Offset: Title:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0x38662 Main (0x7 from string package 0x0)
0x44288 Advanced (0x14 from string package 0x0)
0x44B43 Advanced (0x14 from string package 0x0)
0x4BDE5 Chipset (0x16 from string package 0x0)
0x536E7 Boot (0x18 from string package 0x0)
0x56A5E Security (0x32 from string package 0x0)
0x57C25 Save & Exit (0x41 from string package 0x0)

In bios I have the following visible.

Main, Advanced, Security, Boot, Save & Exit.

This means that I should be looking for a hex binary table within the setup module that has the following values.

01 01 00 00 01 01 01

bur the closest I found is

01 00 00 01 01 01 01

at hex location 000D910 within the setup.bin. I am not 100% sure that this corresponds to the visible menu's since its in a different order. This means I will not be touching it.
Whats wierd is that new default the bios should revert to be 63*C even though the option is not shown within the bios menu when loading default setting.

I attached my current bios both the extracted setup.bins.

That beer is still available if anyone else has other ideas, but I think i'm throwing in the white flag before I have a nice brick on my hands.

My next step is a new skywell laptop that is passive cooled. Just another year Smile

Here are the results from the first tool.
https://www.sendspace.com/file/hfmdfk
It crashed quite a bit, but in the end it extracted the same bios I did. I compared them.
I do have read/write access to the bios portion. I know because I reflashed it successfully.

The second tool could not identify my bios.
