Have you tried oveclocking the P5PE-VM's FSB to 1066MHz?

The E6600 needs an FSB of 1066MHz to reach 3.06GHz. At 800MHz you only get ~2.3GHz.

I think this is what's happening:

Normally the FSB on the 865G chipset (used in this motherboard) only goes up to 800MHz, but the P5PE-VM has a manufacturer-specified overclock mode (with appropriate warnings) to push it to 1066MHz. I'm sure the BIOS setup has these settings somewhere.

The board, P5PE-VM is advertaised to have 1066 mode, but there is no setting in the BIOS to change that at all.
I can change the CPU ratio (Max 11, Min 6) and it doesn't change FSB.
My FSB speed is currently 121MHz and frequency of 180MHz, and the only thing I can do is:
Change CPU Ratio (somehow it didn't work)
Max CPUID Value Limit (currently disabled)
Execute Disable Function (currently enabled)
Virualization technology (Currently enabled)
CPU internal thermal control (Auto)
EIST(Auto)

In the BIOS page it also says:
Processor
Type: Pentium® Dual-Core CPU E6600 @ 3.06G
Speed: 180MHz
Count: 1

which is odd...
I don't want to physically do a pin mod on my processor... It never sounds safe to me...

Looks like pinmod or SetFSB are the only avenues left.

Maybe the BIOS is hard-wired to set 800MHz for Pentium Dual Cores (E2xxx series) and 1066MHz for Core 2 Duos. Might there be a way to change this?

On the other hand, maybe it's a chipset limitation.

What's the speed and timings of the RAM that you're using on the P5PE-VM?

It seems that 865G-based socket 775 motherboards (like the Asus P5PE-VM and Asrock 775i65G) can only do 1066 FSB with DDR400 RAM due to limitations with the FSB/RAM ratio.
Even with Conroe-based E6300s, other people get downclocked to 800 FSB when they used DDR333 RAM.

Also, 1066 FSB on this board requires an AGP video card (running on just the IGP limits it to 800 as well).

Alternatively, given your strange FSB readings, it seems that the Wolfdale-based Pentium Dual Core E6300 is different enough (shame on you Intel) to confuse the FSB circuitry on the motherboard.

and its among a few boards that have DDR400 + AGP support while allowing you to run core 2 duo processors .. im pretty sure there is no mention of pentium dual-core on the supported cpus list but im not surprised that it works..


as to the mystery of the lower fsb speed.. i signed up just to say that..
this board will always default to base FSB of 800 Mhz as long as the System Integrated video is used.. to get the 1066 FSB speed, *YOU MUST USE AN EXTERNAL VIDEO CARD* this is why his processor is showing at 800 FSB speed

(multiplier * 200 = Ghz speed, use multi times 266 for 1066 bus, 333 for 1333 bus, 400 for 1600 bus etc etc)

i just purchased a core duo extreme x6800 cpu (2.93ghz) to pair with my P5PE-VM board.. but before i did i had this nagging hunch that i think this board could work with some more recent chips that were released after the last time the bios was edited.. because this board is from summer 2006.. but there were chips released in 07 08 09 even 2010 that can fit into this board, socketwise.. and also, i saw a similar board by Asrock that also has support for quad core q6600.. and also 45nm wolfdale cpus...

i think the pentium dual-core e6600 is indeed a 45nm cpu so im just wondering how it is you are able to overcome the compatibility problems so easily...?

my question to you wizards here on the site is:
would it be possible to get this same board (Asus P5PE-VM) to accept an e7600 wolfdale core that runs at the boards oc 1066 bus giving me the normal speed for this chip of 3.06ghz? (running with internal graphics would result in 800 FSB and a speed of 2.3ghz with the e7600, IF it could work)

might it be possible to enable the use of quad core cpus on this motherboard? asrock has clearly done this using the same intel chipset... via bios update


also, the original poster would have had better success using a pentium dual core e5xxx series chip with this board as they have 800fsb aswell, but still clock to the proper ghz clock speed.. this would ensure 100% compatibility with this board.

it would be nice to have these cpus working on the asus board because the asus board also features gigabit ethernet and the asrock is only 10/100

just to share my experience here,
i tested last nite different wolfdale core cpus in this board
and all of them worked

e5700 cpu is now in my board providing 3.0ghz speed at the boards proper FSB speed of 800mhz
i also tested e7500 which worked aswell, and also e5400 was installed

here u can see the benchmark i did with this cpu on XP 32bit (32bit benchmark, 64bit would be considerably higher)

also this benchmark was performed with only 256mb ram installed

i have decided to just ignore the error code + keep the original manufacturer bios
the only thing i really wish i could fix is the power to allow the board to shut itself off
and support proper sleep etc
is there anything i can do about this ACPI settings?
this is due to 45nm vs 65nm litho + lower power requirements i bet..
