Acer Aspire 5742z v1.22 .fd file request
#1
Can anyone help. I have managed to brick my laptop. Blank screen on power up, power light stays on for 10secs then dies.

I tried to do the 'battery out, fn+esc, power button, power light flash and kept keys held down' routine, using v1.23 PEW71X64.fd on a quick formatted USB stick (renamed from 71124.fd) from the Acer site.
Unfortunately my laptop was originally running the 1.22 version, which is not on the Acer site (the earliest version available is v1.23).
The power lights on the bottom of the laptop do flash but the laptop dies after 10 seconds with fn+esc still being pressed down.
I have another Acer laptop (working) which is identical to the bricked one. I was wondering if there was a way to extract the .fd file from the BIOS on that one to use on the broken one. Failing that, has anyone got the original v1.22 file so I can salvage it.
Cheers!

Ok friend,
I think You have tried to modify Video Card Settings and after saving BOO ! Bricked
So now try to clear CMOS remove all AC DC battery on laptop, on MoBo and pray !
Your Recovery Bios has name PEW71X64.fd (use PMTool to get It) It's not Capsulated Bios so It's enough to rename and put on an USB Fat32 Fprmatted Stick, then try Recovery Procedure :

- Performing the emergency flash:

- Shutdown the netbook (notebook)
- Remove all peripheral devices
- Remove battery, Remove AC power cord
- Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds (battery and AC power still out), then release
- Put the USB Memory Stick in the USB port
- Hold "Fn" + "Esc" and plug the AC power cord in
- Now press the power button (whilst still holding Fn + Esc).
Wait until the fan will run, then release "Fn" + "Esc" keys
- The fan will run for about 2-10 minutes and the USB drive activity LED will blink
- I think the netbook rebooted automatically. If it doesn't, unplug the AC power cord once the fan has turned off

The bios should be updated with the modified BIOS, and boot as per normal.

If don't Recover nothing It need a Service or to buy an SPI Programmer with a POMONA Soic Clip :

Let me know

Friend. Thanks for the prompt response.
At this point, the fan starts up, runs for 10 seconds then clunks out dead.
Same as ever.
I tried this before but without taking out all peripherals too (HDD, ODD, WiFi module and even the memory), same result. "I think he's dee-ad, Jim". Took out the CMOS battery for the whole of the Argentina/ Iran game and replaced, repeated the steps, same. Power light flashes, fan runs then 'clunk', off.
Reckon the chip has had it.
Is it worth replacing the BIOS. A 5742z SOIC from ebay costs around £20), says it is pre-programmed already, or just forget it? (has been a while since I soldered and don't have a fine-tipped iron).
Looked into the SOIC clip and programmer but I am not sure if I will ever use it again (although looking through this site has certainly reignited some latent interest, used to re-flashing BIOS onto DIMM working at Dell many many many moons ago, ah when life was simpler!).
Really, thank you for your suggestions, wasn't expecting such a prompt and lucid response, especially about trying it without peripherals. Oo-err, missus.
Power to yer elbow Sir.

Power to yer elbow Sir.

there are many ways to follow :

1. try to reprogram Eeprom directly on Board using a POMONA Soic Clip
2. Desolder Chip and reprogram It on SPI PGM
2. Buy a new chip pre-programmed

I don't know your abilities, but all users have tried one time in a life !
