Changing the Network Boot "ROM" / PXE on a Gigabyte Z68
#1
Is anyone up for it?

The integrated NIC is a Realtek 8111/8168B [10ec:8168]

There's the latest (and a few older) BIOS here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3975&dl=1#bios

I will need to be able to replace the "ROM" contents myself, as I iron out bugs, etc... but I will reward my tutor extremely well.

I also have two Z68X-UD7-B3 boards, and would like to do the same to them.

They're basically the same deal, but they have 2 NICs instead of one.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product...=3847#bios

No, I will not pay in UD7 motherboards. Smile Paypal only Smile
Here is a replacement PXE rom for the NIC I mentioned, in case anyone is that enthusiastic.

Attached Files
.rom   gpxe-1.0.1-10ec8168.rom (Size: 58.5 KB / Downloads: 7)

.rar   Z8MAD2H3.rar (Size: 1.41 MB / Downloads: 9)

Is this what you want?
What i did was, using cbrom32 (it's award bios) extracted PCI ROM© named rtegrom.lom and verified it was pxe boot rom for 10ec:8168

Then i released the rom from the bios file

then took the pxe rom you uploaded, renamed it to rtegrom.lom and inserted it (after checking it's correct and for 10ec:8168) into the romfile

The command sequence was.

cbrom32 Z8MAD2H3.F9 /D
cbrom32 Z8MAD2H3.F9 /pci extract (here program asks which of the pciroms to extract, i choose C, A was RAID, B was AHCI so C was the one.
ren rtegrom.lom rtegrom.ori
ren gpxe-1.0.1-10ec8168.rom rtegrom.lom
cbrom32 Z8MAD2H3.F9 /pci release (choose here C again).
cbrom32 Z8MAD2H3.F9 /pci rtegrom.lom

That's it.

That looks pretty much exactly what I need, and matches the slightly outdated guide I read, but can you link me to the appropriate version of CBROM? (And yes, I did check this site, that's how I got here hehehehe - unless I checked the wrong place, I could only find ancient versions).

http://etherboot.org/wiki/biosext:
Code:
CBROM 1.xx is for Award BIOS 4.5 series only
CBROM 6.xx is for Award BIOS 6.0 series only
CBROM 2.xx is for Award BIOS 4.5 and 6.0 series

I grabbed CBROM 6.xx from: http://www.biosmods.com/download/award/cbrom606.zip

Hmmm.... I tried with the BIOS you sent, and it said "Invalid BIOS Image!"

(Yes, I did unrar it first).

I was using the Q-Flash Utility v2.23 that is on-board (in the BIOS) - the same way I updated my bios to F9. Is there some "special" way I should be doing it?

Q-Flash will also let me save the existing BIOS to disk, so I will do that now... it's the same size as the one you sent, although a comparison on the context shows the modified version is rather "jumbled up" ... I would have thought a change to one module would only affect a small section of the bios.

Anyway, attaching the live version here...

Just to check it wasn't "my bad", I downloaded a modded BIOS from here, and it loaded fine.

Try these two, one has Gigabyte slic2.1 and the other doesn't.

Just to see if cbrom makes some mistake with checksums or something.

Test if those files load without error.

This time i just did the simple procedure, took cbrom from andy's award tool 1.52 (this cbrom is 1.98) and simply replaced the rtegrom.lom file into the original bios.

renamed the option rom you want inserted to rtegrom.lom and copied in the same directory as cbrom and original bios file.

then run

cbrom32 z8mad2h3.f9 /PCI retgrom.lom

this is file with no slic, then took that file and passed over slic tool to add 2.1 and fix checksums if they were wrong.

I wait your news Wink And sorry for late reply Wink

I ran a check on something, since I was curious - turns out that the Gigabyte @BIOS Windows based BIOS updater ignores checksums, but the BIOS based Q-Flash does.

So I tried installing your original BIOS via @BIOS (which is how I loaded that other SLIC 2.1 BIOS), and it happily installed it.

Then rebooted to an EPIC fail, and it ran off to recover it's backup BIOS.

Obviously I wouldn't be trying these crazy things if I didn't have a backup BIOS on board. :p

Might be good to tell Gigabyte owners to use their Q-Flash, I think it's in the GA-P55's and up. You just copy the "ROM" to a USB stick and it can do the upgrade from BIOS. At least it will verify the checksum.

Results from the new BIOS:

Z8MAD2H3.F9 - CHECKSUM = 5A00 (Good)
Z8MAD2~1.F9 - CHECKSUM = BD00 (Good) [That the non-SLIC]

I went ahead with the SLIC version... and now my BIOS is doing some kind of rebooting dance of infinite deaths....

Apparently this is a huge Gigabyte issue with the F8 bios, which was restored from "Backup BIOS". After a few hours, I managed to get into BIOS again and upload a stock copy of F9.

Right now I'm a little gun shy about trying anymore BIOS upgrades, at least until I can figure out how to copy F9 to the backup BIOS.

Okay, both BIOS failed after install .... Can't think where to go from here, since it is probably the option rom I gave you that's causing the problems - even though network boot is always disabled by default...

Could you make a basic SLIC mod, just so I can check it works? If that works okay, then it's obviously the boot rom, and I'll try some other roms (like PLOP), and do them myself.

One just Slic2.1 and the other Slic2.1 and rtegrom changed on the fly, if it works i will explain Smile
