Frustrating BIOS issue
#1
I there. I have an HP s7620.uk with an ASUS A8MN-BR AM2 motherboard. I've tried a modified BIOS that purportedly added new CPU support and as I'm sure you can guess, the computer no longer works. But it isn't as straight forward as not posting. In fact it does post. Recognises the CPU, RAM drives etc, gives a warning about default settings loaded and needing these to be set properly (I've reset the BIOS) and then tries to boot and gives nothing more than a blinking white cursor in the upper left corner. Trying to get into the BIOS by pressing F1 reults in the same. Using the onboard graphics instead of the dedicated GPU results in garbage being displayed instead when trying to enter the BIOS, though on boot it will display normally. Has anyone got any possible solutions. If I could just get it to boot off the USB floppy and allow me to restore the official HP BIOS then that in itself would be a help.

Update: As I was typing this, I had left the computer on for a few minutes and it has now changed from blinking cursor to garbage on the screen. This is with the 8400GS in it

Many thanks, Andrew

Did you try creating a bootable USB that uses autoexec.bat and set it as your primary boot device.

Thank you for answering. Yes, I have created a bootable usb drive and floppy disk (using usb floppy drive) with an autoexec.bat file. Cannot set the first boot device as I cannot get into the bios or bootable devices menu. Currently trying booting the machine holding winkey+B with a bootable usb key complete with flash utility and bios rom. So far no joy.

Hmmmm... what kind of BIOS Chip do you have?

Hi there,

As it comes up as a Phoenix - Award BIOS v6.00PG I've been trying measures relevent to both Phoenix and Award, including Ctrl+Home to initialise an emergency flash. I've used a bootable CD-ROM, USB key and USB floppy drive and I'm experiencing no joy.

Other than that I can tell you little else.

I didn't mean what "software" your BIOS had, rather the physical chip. If you have a PLCC-32 chip, you can use something like a paper clip to connect the right connections on the chip to force the bios in to bootblock recovery, which will automatically start trying to boot your floppy.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

It's a PMC 0824, I don't know if there's anything that can vbe done with that. Any help would most certainly be appreciated. Thank you.

MMMM.... did you try looking for the chip on your mobo, peeling the sticker off the chip (if there) and try to get the entire brand and serial number.
