HP 8710p bios modification - fan at full speed after flashing
Hi guys and girls Smile

I chose that kind of title because I know there might be more people with the same issue trying to find solution and may be they will find it faster if here will be the solution.

Well after days of searching in google I found out that I did a irreversible mistake and flashed the bios to the newest version F.20 and I guess it is nothing which I can fix by myself easily so I though I could try to get help here =) even I know chance is very low but better to try instead giving up.

I got the HP 8710p as a present and I thought: "Well, lets fresh that thing up and have fun" and I installed the newest bios on it  Rolleyes yeah I know who is so stupid and flashes without doing some research? Me! ^^ I know it's my fault. But I am human and make mistakes - well I learned from this because I never encountered such thing. HP seems to have a great sense of humor or paid the programmers so bad that they decided to pay it back to the customers for what ever reason. There is no explanation or logical reason for such an stupid bios update which restricts one to flash back and they even don't think about to give a fix.

What is the problem:
The fan is running the entire time on full speed. Before that patch it was so quiet and so awesome because the fan just started to spin up if the cpu heat goes up over a certain temperature. Now it's on full throttle - for no reason!

Possible solutions:
Well my reasearch with google brought 2 possible solutions - a) sell it / throw it away or b) buy a bios chip and solder it on the board. Well I think there is a third solution and that needs someone with knowledge and skill which I unfortunately don't have - bios modification.

I am here and seeking for help because I think that here could be that one person or a team who has enough skill to perform that task and if not it was worth trying. I saw many awesome work here Smile

My opinion:
I guess somewhere in the bios are the settings stored for the fan control which. I don't think that it is a hidden setting in the bios which has to be unlocked. It is hard coded values for the response of the fan to the cpu heat / threshold - so if someone is able to manipulate that and put it back in to the installation routine then it might work with a reflash with the modified bios.

The bios is surely rsa encrypted - another epic move from HP (and other companies) to show how one can frustrate his customers. I guess that is the reason why I am not able to find the value in the hex-information of the files.

Yeah I know I could kill my bios when I use a modified bios. I have nothing to lose only to win Smile

I am not sure if I am allowed to link here but the bios files are easily to find over google.

Ok I also noticed quite more.. ferocity in my fans when going from F.06 to F.0F.
After decompressing the BIOSes with ADDCC I could see two ThermalZones sections disappeared, with many changes to _TMP operations too.
So, I don't know, it could be as well the same actual temperatures are now reported slightly higher to the system. Or that somewhere else they are allocating the power budget differently, see for example here.

But IMHO, it's probably like they just adopted a more aggressive/cooler plan.
I have no hard data, but I actually felt like ever since the laptop has been only "quite hot" on my desk rather than "lava hot".
My hears didn't have the same level of appreciation for the jet engine though.

So.. while everybody and their dog would recommend you to try to edit your DSDT, I think there are way better solutions nowadays.
You can actually very easily control the fan and its curve from windows/linux with nbfc, and you could even attempt some good undervolting.
