MSI X79A-GD45 CPU upgrade/add request
#1
Hello, I have an MSI X79A-GD45 (MS7735), the regular version, not the 8D or the Plus. Bios version 2.8 (latest).

I would like to use Xeon E5-1xxx V2 CPUs with it, but MSI only allows i7 and E5-2xxx CPUs. Virtually all other motherboard brands with the same X79 chipset support any E5 Xeon V1 or V2 as well as i7. Currently I have i7-3930k, but I would like to use Xeon E5-1650 V2.

The current bios for my motherboard can be found here https://download.msi.com/bos_exe/mb/7735v28.zip

The following is a short list of other motherboards with X79 chipset that support Xeon E5-1xxx V2 CPUs:
https://www.asus.com/us/supportonly/sabe...pdesk_cpu/
https://www.asus.com/supportonly/p9x79/helpdesk_cpu/
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-...upport-cpu
The MSI X79A-GD45 Plus is similar to my motherboard and it supports E5-1620 V2, but not 1650 V2.

Can my bios be modded to include support for at least the E5-1650 V2? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Post a screenshot of Mainboard tab of CPU-Z.
Explain exactly what happens when you try to boot with new CPU.

Here's a screen shot of CPU-Z. I haven't bought a 1650 V2 yet because I know it doesn't work with my bios as it is now. Other people have tried it with that specific CPU and they said the motherboard doesn't post.

I've seen that, but I'm guessing that was done with a modded bios because there are several different posts on other forums where the person can't get a 1650 v2 or 1680 v2 to post on their MSI X97A-GD45, but a 1620 or i7 does post.

However, now after looking at CPU performance specs, I think it may not be worth it to change CPUs. Except maybe the 1680 V2 since that has 8 cores vs the 6 I have now.
