[REQUEST] Lenovo ThinkPad W520 (8BETxxWW) Whitelist Removal
#1
-Manufacturer: Lenovo (previously IBM)
- ThinkPad W520
- Part Number: 4270CT0
-Bios revision: 1.26 (8BET46WW)
-Bios Type: Phoenix EFI
-Bios Download Link: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/...uj06us.exe
-Current original card (like): PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8176&SUBSYS_819510EC&REV_01
-Card to be added (like): Atheros AR9382 (not arrived yet); Ericsson F3607gw/Sierra Wireless 8792 HSUPA

BIOS Backup from running install: http://www.sendspace.com/file/l70hro
RW-Everything ACPI Table dump: http://www.sendspace.com/file/x814x4

I tried using the Phoenix BIOS Mod Tool 1.90 and Endeer's PhoenixMod tool, but I don't get the BIOSCOD0*.rom files; just a lot of files with UUID.rom names.

Please remove the whitelist from my BIOS! I will be most grateful, as it will allow me WIFI access in MacOS X 10.7 Lion.

Many thanks,
Barrett

Question
Hey All,

Problem)

I'm getting tired of my W520 WiFi network getting stuck in "Limited" and rebooting is the only fix multiple times per day.
This blog post says to try changing WiFi properties from AES to TKIP. (but that's not a choice)
https://msmvps.com/blogs/richardfenn...windows-8.aspx

Option 1)
It's time to change the mini PCI WiFi card but I learned that Lenovo has this wonderful Whitelist "feature" for our safety.

Can someone help me create a W520 BIOS to remove my whitelist?

I'm currently running BIOS 1.42 on the Thinkpad W520 Type 4270-CTO (Windows 8.1 x64)
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub...s/8buj21us.txt
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/...uj21us.exe

I have Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 AGN

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4238&SUBSYS_11118086&REV_35
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4238&SUBSYS_11118086
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4238&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4238&CC_0280
_________________________________________________

Option 2)
I read that some Thinkpad's have second miniPCI slots that are not monitored by the BIOS whitelist. Anyone know if my Thinkpad W520 Type 4270-CTO has a second slot? Either way it would be nice to unlock my BIOS. I've googled around this this request thread seems to be the place to ask.

Thanks!

EDIT: I just searched a 2nd time via google, now that I know to add the word W520 BIOS SLIC
I found someone posted it already, sweet
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads...post800661
(trying it now)

EDIT 2: When I run winflash.exe and choose FvRecovery.fd to flash I get error Cannot Launch the UEFI Emulator.

EDIT 3: I found WinPhlash 1.7.16.0 (newer than the 1.5) So far it's working, I'm making this final post before I press ok (crosses fingers)

EDIT 4: That didnt work, got a new error
Corrupted interface descriptors in the new BIOS file Part Table Signature not found in the interface. Error code - 161
[Image: 2yVN7fZ.png]

EDIT 5: I re-read the original post and it said
Flash from Windows. Run WINUPTP.EXE /s as Administrator.
So I opened my start menu (press start button) typed Command, found the command prompt. Right Click, Run As Administrator
Changed directories over to where winuptp.exe was
WINUPTP.EXE /s

Success! (I think) The whole system slowed down for a minute and then returned to normal. I'm pretty sure that means the silent update took. Is it safe to order a new WiFi card now? I want confirmation it worked.

EDIT 6: Yes, the flash happened after the first reboot!
My new 802.11ac Intel Network 7260.HMWG WiFi Wireless-AC 7260 half mini PCI card is on order
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DMCVKMU
I have 3 antennas but I read I only hookup 2 since the new card is 2x2
My new 802.11AC card is on order

Thanks for the MOD guys! This new firmware should do the trick. I posted in great detail in hopes it helps someone else.

Hello everyone.

I bought this new WiFi card, which my laptop now aggressively refuses to work with.
So, I did some research and came across this forum, and looked through some of the threads about bios modding, and saw sovem generously helping the other users out with mods. I was hoping that someone would help me make my laptop accept the new WiFi card.
I tried following this tutorial (ThinkPad BIOS hacking guide), but couldn't split the modules.

Full model name of laptop: Lenovo Thinkpad W520-4284DW3
Link to Lenovos BIOS utility: 8buj21us.exe
The original WiFi cards info: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0085&SUBSYS_13118086&REV_34
The new WiFi cards info: PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&SUBSYS_10811A3B&REV_01
Dump of the BIOS (sovem requested this from another user): http://ge.tt/1YdwYcW1/v/0

I hope someone will help me do this, as i don't have the skill to do it my self.
Thanks in advance, Drps.

flash.bat contains this: WINUPTP.EXE /s, which runs WINUPTP.exe in silent mode.
As i have already updated the BIOS to version 1.42, this does nothing.
When running WINUPTP.exe as administrator, I get this message:

Is there another way to flash BIOS to a lenovo pc, or can we modify something to bypass the version check?

Here you go. Smile
http://ge.tt/4kS8heW1
sovem has already modded the bios, though.
Do you have any advice on how to flash the bios, even though its already "up to date"?

Glory, I was able to flash the new bios.
Since no-one responded to my posts, i tried to solve the problem myself.
The solution was pretty darn simple, i just had to downgrade to 1.41, and then upgrade to the modded 1.42.
I'll post more feedback when I swap out the WiFi card.
Thanks a lot for the mod!
