Request: Bios mod for vaio e to support ivy bridge processors
#1
Big Grin
Hi,

I'm new here so hello everybody and sorry for my English if it's bad, I'm French Big Grin .
So I came here because I am interested in changing my sony vaio processor (intel core i3-330m with an intel hm55 chipset) for an upcoming Ivy bridge processor. Though I now that the specs should be compatible (socket, frequency, TDP, FSB, etc), I'm pretty sure that the bios won't recognise a non-westmere built processor. So I wonder if you could help me in my project by modding the bios that I have now on my computer (Sony Vaio VPCEB1M1E/BJ) to make it support an Ivy bridge processor. It's an AMI bios.

Thanks a lot for your help!! Here is the link to download the bios: http://www.sony.fr/support/fr/product/VP...28463_5313

PS: I'm quite a noob in this domain so in fact I realise that I'm posting this while Ivy Bridge processors haven't been released yet, so maybe it's a bit useless... I don't know.
Anyway I would also like to know a bit more about the recovery options of the bios just in case... I saw that there is a section in this site about this, but what if I don't have a floppy drive on my laptop? (which is the case Big Grin ).

Thanks a lot for your patience, again,
ltp

I would like to ask a question.
I saw, after some researches, that it is possible to open my bios with mm tool v 4.5, and to edit it. I also saw that in this soft, there is a section called "CPU patch", and when I go there to see what it's about, I see that there are 11 "Microcodes", for, I guess, 11 processors supported by the bios. I saw on the Internet, that it is possible to add some of these "microcodes" to a bios.
So, my question is: if I just add the microcode of the processor that I want to the bios, will it support my new processor? Is it all a question of adding microcodes? Or is the procedure much more complicated?

I unmounted my laptop and I saw on the socket "rPGA 988A". I've read on the Internet that the 988B processors (Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge) were not compatible with 988A sockets, only with "some 989 sockets" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_G1). So what do you guys think: should I stick to a Westmere 988A i5/i7, which I am sure will be compatible with my socket, and likely even with my actual bios? Are the 988B processors really incompatible with 988A sockets?

Thanks.

Ok so I think I'm finally going to get an i5-560m/580m westmere cpu.

Does a 45 W quad-core, like the core i7-820QM produce to much heat for my 15" laptop which has now a 35 W core i3-330M?
