(UEFI) Dell XPS 15z L511z modded BIOS - and HOWTO
Yes it sounds like BIOS. Doesn't seem like it's a bios settings related issue though. I have a similar setup and shutdown/restart works fine.

Do you think there's any reason to re-flash the BIOS? I don't have any issue with Ubuntu 12.10 x64, so I kinda figured the problem would have been Windows.

I'm likely just going to reinstall Windows. If you have the same setup and everything is working, it's obviously something on my system that is the culprit.

Nah if Ubuntu is working fine then the culprit is windows 8. My mouse suddenly stopped working in win8 though its fine in mint and lion. My suspicion is that w8 plays dirty with hardware contrary to w7.

I ended up re-flashing the BIOS with the same version of A12 that was already loaded. One thing I think I didn't do the first time I installed A12 was to go into the BIOS and load the setup defaults, so this time, I loaded the defaults, double checked everything, then booted into Windows 8. I haven't had an issue with shutting down/restarting since.

I was also having trouble with my MS wireless mouse constantly changing how many lines it would scroll with the scroll wheel. That issue seems to be gone as well. I noticed that the wireless transceiver, and the mouse are now listed as devices when you go into the Metro-based control panel and look under devices, when they didn't appear there before (even though the mouse and all it's functions were working correctly - aside from the scrolling issue).

The fan also seems to come on less frequently as well.

This all sorta defies logic to me. I doubt re-flashing the BIOS did anything, so I'm going to assume it was just re-loading the setup defaults that changed *something*.

It's only been a day, so I don't want to jinx anything, but things actually seem to be working correctly now.

is their any possible way to enable the wwan/tv pcie port on the xps l502x to get access to the sata controller or allow it to recognize an msata ssd but using modules from the precision m4600 or m4700 bios?

Hey Ahmed

Well it's possible but it really depends what kind of config you want in OSX. For example I switch my two USB3 ports off and disable the NVIDIA card to extend battery life.

What config do you want in OSX?

@all - apologies for delay in updates as have been travelling extensively for the last month. Hopefully I'll be back on solid ground for some time very shortly.

Hi,
I'd like to know if it's possibile to make an hard reset of CMOS (or BIOS).
The problem is that I can't find anymore the boot device:
*HD
*USB
*NETWORK
*CD-ROM
*etc...

The only two that I have are:
*diagnostic (this works but funtoo doesn't)
*funtoo

Anyone knows how can I fix this? Any suggestions? I'm thinking about using Jumper, but I can't find it on the motherboard.

mmm, as far I know, hard reset of CMOS can be dont by loading the default settings at the BIOS setup, or by removing the CMOS battery with no laptop battery por power cord plugged.

leave it 1 minute without cmos battery, and then reasembly the unit.

Nooop - I assume, he has UEFI bios , this means that removing battery will only reset a system clock. All the setup data are stored in nvram. You need to reflash bios with /cvar key from recovery - don't see other way
Unless you are able to uefi boot some how from recovery, start UEFI shell and make dh +bcfg trick
